FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is points clawback?

Points clawback is the reversal of reward points, miles or a sign-up bonus that a loyalty programme has already credited, typically because the purchase behind them was refunded, returned or found not to qualify, or because the member turned out not to be eligible for an award. At American Express, for example, returning a purchase paid for with an enrolled card causes a corresponding deduction of the points earned on it from the Membership Rewards account. [5]

Key takeaways

  • Clawback is a correction that runs backwards: points already credited are taken away, which is different from points expiring or a redemption being refused.
  • This page groups three cases under the term — spend points reversed after a refund or an ineligible purchase, a bonus recovered because the member did not qualify, and a transfer that cannot be pulled back. [5]
  • Under the United States Membership Rewards terms, American Express may remove points awarded on an ineligible purchase even if that leaves a negative balance. [5]
  • Cancelling or unenrolling the last product linked to a Rewards account means losing all the points in it immediately, subject to a few stated exceptions. [5]

What are the three kinds of points clawback?

Clawback is a correction, not a reward event. The points existed, they were counted in the balance, and they are then removed because the transaction or the condition that produced them no longer stands. That makes it different from points that expire under an inactivity rule, and different from a request for an award that is simply turned down.

The first case is spend-points reversal. When a purchase is refunded, returned or found not to be a qualifying purchase, the reward currency earned on it is removed along with the spend. The second is welcome-bonus clawback: a bonus paid for meeting a condition — reaching a minimum spend target, for instance — is recovered when the condition is undone or the member turns out not to have qualified. The third is transfer reversal, which concerns points already sent to an airline or hotel programme and works by its own logic.

Because the three are handled by different parts of a programme's agreement, the answer to "can this be undone?" depends on which of the three applies. The rules that bind a member are the ones in the agreement of the programme holding the points.

How Does a Refund Take Back Points?

The rules described here come from the American Express Membership Rewards Program Terms and Conditions for the United States, last updated October 2026. [5] They start with the definition of earning itself: an eligible purchase is a purchase for goods and services "minus returns and other credits", so a return reduces the spend on which points are earned. [5]

Where points have already been awarded and the purchase is later returned, the statement credit the card member receives causes a corresponding deduction of the points earned from the Rewards account. [5] A separate provision covers points awarded on an ineligible purchase: if American Express determines that the purchase did not qualify, it may remove those points even where the result is a negative points balance. [5]

Reversals also run on the redemption side. If a member returns a reward obtained with points, American Express says the member either gets the points back in the Rewards account or gets a credit on the card account, and that a credit may be changed back into points if the member calls. [5] Where a purchase paid for with Pay with Points is partly refunded, the refund arrives as a statement credit on the card account, and American Express asks the member to call if points should be reinstated instead. [5] Redemptions are otherwise treated as final: the terms say redemptions cannot be reversed, and that statement-credit redemptions in particular cannot be reversed or expedited. [5] Transactions that are disputed rather than refunded follow a different route, described under chargeback.

Can a welcome bonus be clawed back?

The Membership Rewards terms provide for recovering a points incentive award when the member is found not to have been eligible for it. They describe the resulting shortfall as a negative balance caused by not having enough points in the account to cover the reversal of that award. [5]

The same section of the agreement addresses conduct. If American Express determines in its sole judgment that a member has engaged in, or attempted, fraud, abuse, misuse or gaming in earning or using points — including manufacturing spend or otherwise generating point earn on ineligible purchases — it may suspend the ability to earn or use points, take away points even to a negative balance, and cancel the member's products while immediately forfeiting any points in the Rewards account. [5] A member who believes points were removed in error is directed to call the number on the back of the card. [5] For how bonuses are normally earned and tracked, see welcome bonus.

What happens after points are transferred?

Transfers are the case with the least room to undo. Under the Membership Rewards terms, once points are transferred the transfer cannot be reversed, the partner programme's terms and conditions apply, and points transferred to a partner account cannot be converted back into Membership Rewards points. [5] American Express's transfer help page repeats that all points transfers are final and cannot be reversed, and advises checking award availability before completing a transfer. [6] That case is set out separately under transfer reversal.

What are the exceptions and limits?

  • Negative balances. Any points credited later are applied first to reduce a negative balance, and the member cannot use points until the balance is positive again. [5]
  • Closing the card. A member who cancels or unenrolls the last product linked to a Rewards account immediately loses all the points in it; if that last product is a Corporate Card, the member may be able to redeem points for up to 30 days after cancellation or unenrollment. [5] See card cancellation.
  • Cancellation by the issuer. If American Express cancels a product for any reason, including death, insolvency or bankruptcy, all points in the Rewards account are lost, with three stated exceptions: the executor of an estate or personal representative may be able to make a one-time redemption, a cancellation because of inactivity leaves 90 days to use the points, and points are not lost where a product is cancelled by accident. [5]
  • Restricted accounts. Points generally cannot be used, and American Express may cancel the Rewards account, while a product is in restricted status, cancelled or past due, or a returned payment is outstanding; card members with a New York billing address on a linked card account can keep using points in those situations for 90 days by calling the number on the back of their card. [5]
  • Points that never posted. Points from a billing period are not earned where the minimum amount due is not paid on time. They can be earned afterwards, once the amounts due are paid, by requesting them within 12 months of that billing period and paying a fee for each billing period and each card account. [5] This is a posting rule rather than a clawback; see card points posting.

Frequently asked questions

Can a card issuer take back points you have already earned?

Yes. American Express says it may remove points awarded on an ineligible purchase, even if that results in a negative points balance. [5]

What happens if a refund leaves a negative points balance?

Points the member gets later are applied first to reduce the negative balance, and points cannot be used until the balance becomes positive. [5]

Do you get points back if you return something bought with points?

American Express says the member either gets the points back in the Rewards account or receives a credit on the card account, and that a credit may be converted back into points if the member calls. [5]

Can a Membership Rewards transfer be reversed?

No. Once points are transferred the transfer cannot be reversed, and transferred points cannot be converted back into Membership Rewards points. [5] [6]
