How to Book TAP Miles&Go Awards

TAP Miles&Go awards are tickets issued with Bonus Miles in TAP Miles&Go, the loyalty programme of TAP Air Portugal. [1] [3] The programme does not publish a fixed award chart: the number of miles a ticket costs varies with supply and demand, seat availability and how far in advance the booking is made, and the price for a given flight is shown on the TAP website when the search is run. [3]

Key takeaways

  • Award tickets are paid for with Bonus Miles only; Status Miles build status and cannot be spent on awards. [3]
  • There is no fixed award chart — the miles required depend on demand, seat availability and booking lead time, and the live price is shown during the search. [3]
  • Award seats are capacity-controlled and may not be offered on every flight; on Star Alliance and other partner airlines the operating carrier decides what is released. [3]
  • Miles are debited when the ticket is issued, and an award ticket is valid for one year from issuance unless it was issued under a promotion. [3]

What an award costs

TAP's programme terms state that TAP does not practise predetermined prices for award tickets: the number of miles needed varies according to offer and demand, seat availability on the flights, and how early the booking is made. [3] The prices in force are those shown on the TAP website at the time of the search, and they take into account, among other factors, whether the award seat is on a TAP flight or on a partner airline. [3] Everything needed to issue a ticket — the miles required, the destinations, the dates and times and the availability — can be checked on the website while searching for flights. [3]

The earning side matters because the two mile types are not interchangeable. Status Miles are earned on TAP flights and on flights of airlines in the Star Alliance, and some partnerships, products or campaigns can also add Status Miles, while flights operated by other TAP Miles&Go partner airlines earn Bonus Miles only. [3] TAP's own earning page says the same: flying Star Alliance earns Status and Bonus Miles, and flying the other partner airlines earns Bonus Miles only. [4] Only Bonus Miles can be used to issue award tickets, products and services, or partner redemptions. [3]

Gold and Navigator members get a special miles price on award tickets for flights operated by TAP Air Portugal, for new issues from 28 July 2026. [3] It applies only to awards paid with miles from the eligible member's own account, and not to cash bookings, Cash&Miles, Star Alliance flights or flights operated by other partner airlines. [3] It is not offered to Gold Partner members or to members who obtained Gold by buying Club TAP Miles&Go. [3] On flyTAP the special price is applied automatically when the eligible member signs in, selects the pay-with-miles option and chooses TAP-only flights; on Contact Center bookings eligibility is checked when the ticket is issued. [3] The price can also be used for passengers on the account holder's beneficiary list, provided the ticket is issued with miles from that account and the beneficiary-list rules are met. [3]

Booking an award

Start with a miles search. The flyTAP booking form carries a pay-with-miles option alongside the cash search. [2] Once the search runs, the site displays the miles required, the destinations and dates available, the flight times and the seat availability for the award. [3]

Check the routing against the segment limits before you commit. An itinerary that runs past the permitted number of segments cannot be issued as a single award, and the limits differ between TAP-operated awards and Star Alliance or partner awards. [3]

Budget for the fees, not just the miles. Airport fees, carrier surcharges, security charges and any other fees, as well as any credit card fees, are the member's responsibility. [3] On award bookings, the fees collected at the time of booking are set by the operating airline or airport body according to its own criteria, and they are itemised before the purchase is completed. [3]

Issuance and debit. Tickets are issued once payment for the booking is confirmed, and the miles are debited from the account at the moment of issuance. [3] Award tickets are not transferable, but they can be issued for a third party at the account holder's request, provided the holder receives no monetary compensation for it. [3] Where the booking is made with miles through the TAP Miles&Go Contact Center and the ticket is not for the account holder, the holder must give the Contact Center a validation code sent to the email address or mobile number registered on the account; Gold and Navigator members are exempt from that step. [3] Awards on flights operated by partner airlines that are not for the account holder can only be issued at least seven days before the travel date, and changes to those tickets must also be requested at least seven days before travel. [3]

Star Alliance and partner space

TAP Miles&Go lists more than a hundred partners worldwide, on the ground and in the air. [1] Star Alliance award tickets can be booked at TAP, only in certain fare types, and are valid for the account holder or for a person of their choice; Star Alliance flights cannot be combined with flights of other partner airlines on one award. [3] Awards on partner airlines outside Star Alliance are not combinable with each other and can be combined only with TAP flights, and only in certain fares; TAP notes that in some cases a partner award may not be combinable with flights operated by other airlines at all, including TAP flights. [3]

Award seats are not guaranteed. Availability varies by destination and season, the number of seats is limited even on flights that are not full, and award tickets may not be available on every flight. [3] On Star Alliance and other partner airlines, seat release follows those airlines' own decision. [3] Some cabins and booking classes on partner airlines cannot be booked with miles at all. [3]

Routing limits are set out in the terms. Star Alliance and other partner awards allow round trips of up to six segments and one-way trips of up to three. [3] Awards on TAP-operated flights allow up to four segments on a round trip and up to two on a one-way. [3] Cabin pricing covers the whole journey: if part of the itinerary is booked in Business, the Business miles price applies to the entire trip even where other flights are in Economy, and the same logic applies to First. [3] Award tickets on Star Alliance and other partner airlines cannot be combined with upgrades. [3]

Ticket validity and what is included

An award ticket expires one year after issuance, except award tickets issued under a promotion, which are valid only for the promotion period. [3] TAP's own example: a ticket issued on 31 January 2025 is valid until 30 January 2026, so a change requested on 4 March 2025 still has to be flown by 30 January 2026. [3]

Award tickets do not allow upgrades, with the exception of paid upgrades at check-in, at the boarding gate or through an upgrade auction. [3] No miles are earned on award tickets. [3] Award tickets are not eligible for the TAP Portugal Stopover programme. [3]

Children's award tickets are for ages 2 to 11 and are discounted by 25% on the miles value of the fare available at the time of booking, whatever the value of the ticket issued; they cannot be combined with miles promotions or upgrades, and children aged 5 to 11 may travel alone if a special assistance fare is paid in advance. [3]

Changes, limits and exceptions

  • Once an award ticket is issued, the itinerary originally booked cannot be changed. [3]
  • A change of date or flight time may trigger an extra miles debit where the change moves the booking to a higher fare or class, but no miles are refunded: the original miles value is kept, or the difference to the higher fare is charged and shown before the ticket is reissued. [3]
  • An award issued in Business cannot be changed to Economy. [3]
  • Changes to award bookings are only possible while the TAP Miles&Go account is active. [3] If the miles used for the original ticket have expired by the time of rebooking, only valid miles count for the new booking and the account holder has to cover the difference. [3]
  • Award tickets and benefits cannot be transferred, substituted, extended, changed or refunded unless a specific provision says otherwise, and where a change is allowed a processing fee may apply. [3]
  • Changes to award tickets issued before 28 July 2026 follow the conditions of the original booking, may require extra miles and/or fees, and no miles are returned if the change results in a lower value. [3] If a Gold or Navigator member changes a booking after losing that status, the miles price for members without Gold or Navigator applies. [3]
  • Miles are valid for three years from the activity date, although some bonus miles such as compensation miles and some promotional miles are valid for one year only; before the expiry date, validity can be extended under the Miles Store conditions or through Club TAP Miles&Go membership. [3]
  • What the sources do not settle: no award chart, no fee table by route and no published partner booking classes are given, because TAP states that fees follow the operating carrier's or airport's criteria and that availability is decided by the operating airline. [3]
