Key takeaways
- The British Airways Club moves members through four tiers: Blue as soon as they join, Bronze at 3,500 tier points, Silver at 7,500 and Gold at 20,000. [2]
- Gold is the tier that unlocks First class check-in and boarding, First lounge access, free seat selection at booking, an extra baggage allowance and additional Reward Flight availability. [2]
- Tier points are earned with British Airways and with some partners, while Avios is the reward currency members collect and spend. [5]
- British Airways notes that some restrictions apply to the benefits listed for each tier. [2]
How do you qualify for British Airways Gold?
The British Airways Club is free to join, and membership starts at Blue as soon as a traveller signs up. [2] [5] From there, each tier is set by the number of tier points a member collects, with the benefits listed for that tier. [2]
| Tier | Tier points | Benefits listed by British Airways |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | On joining | Collect Avios, earn tier points, free Wi-Fi Messaging, save details and preferences, member-only offers [2] |
| Bronze | 3,500 | Priority check-in and boarding; free seat selection 7 days before departure [2] |
| Silver | 7,500 | Priority boarding; free seat selection at booking; access to business lounges; extra baggage allowance [2] |
| Gold | 20,000 | First class check-in and boarding; free seat selection at booking; access to First lounges; extra baggage allowance; additional Reward Flight availability [2] |
Tier points can be earned with British Airways and with some of its partners. [5] Members who join after flying can claim Avios and tier points for British Airways flights taken in the three months before they joined. [5]
Moving from Silver to Gold is the step that changes the airport experience most: Silver opens business lounges, while Gold adds First lounges and First class check-in and boarding. [2] Lounge access at either tier is subject to eligibility and availability. [4] For a wider look at what lounge eligibility involves across programmes, see the lounge access checklist.
What benefits does Gold include?
British Airways lists the following Gold benefits, alongside the basic Club benefits that every member keeps: [2]
- First class check-in and boarding. [2]
- Free seat selection at booking. [2]
- Access to First lounges. [2] British Airways operates First lounges as a separate lounge type from its Business and Arrivals lounges, and entry to any of them is subject to eligibility and availability. [4]
- Extra baggage allowance. [2]
- Additional Reward Flight availability. [2]
- The standard member benefits: collecting Avios, earning tier points, free Wi-Fi Messaging on board, saving details and preferences, and member-only offers. [2]
Free Wi-Fi Messaging covers instant messaging applications and text-based emails without attachments. [2] On the Avios side, British Airways guarantees a minimum number of Reward Flight seats on all its flights to and from London Heathrow and London Gatwick: at least eight seats in economy, two in premium economy and four in business. [6] Flights to and from London City carry a guarantee of two business and two economy reward seats. [6] The booking side of that is covered in how to book British Airways Club awards.
Do Gold benefits apply with partner airlines?
Club members can use a range of benefits when flying with other oneworld airlines, including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Hawaiian Airlines, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, Royal Air Maroc and SriLankan Airlines. [2] The partner-by-partner detail is set out in oneworld lounge access.
Aer Lingus is handled separately, because it is not part of oneworld. [2] All Club members can collect Avios and earn tier points on Aer Lingus-operated flights, and other benefits depend on tier and route. [2] For Gold members, the published Aer Lingus benefits are: [2]
- Priority check-in for everyone on the booking, using the Premium or Business Class check-in area, and priority boarding for everyone on the booking. [2]
- Priority security for the member plus one when travelling from Dublin, Shannon, London Heathrow, Amsterdam, Belfast or Birmingham. [2]
- Lounge access for the member plus one at selected lounges, excluding Barbados, when travelling on a transatlantic route. [2]
- One additional bag at 23kg in any cabin, excluding EI Saver Fares; in EI Business class an additional piece up to 32kg is allowed, but the combined weight must not exceed 96kg. [2]
Because Aer Lingus sits outside oneworld, the tier is marked on the boarding pass using the code FFP1, FFP2 or FFP3. [2]
Exceptions and limits
- Restrictions on tier benefits. British Airways states that some restrictions apply to the benefits it lists for each tier, so the headline list is not unconditional. [2]
- Lounge entry is not guaranteed. Access to British Airways Business, First, Arrivals and oneworld lounges is subject to eligibility and availability. [4]
- Aer Lingus lounge access is narrow. The member-plus-one access applies at selected lounges, excludes Barbados, and applies when travelling on a transatlantic route. [2]
- Aer Lingus baggage has exclusions. The extra 23kg bag excludes EI Saver Fares, and the larger EI Business allowance caps the combined weight at 96kg. [2]
- Scope. The thresholds and benefits described here are those British Airways publishes for The British Airways Club, covering the Club's own tiers and the partner benefits listed on the same programme pages, checked on 18 October 2026. [2] [5] Rules for other airlines' programmes are set by those programmes.
For how the tier ladder is run more broadly, see status in The British Airways Club, and for the vocabulary used across programmes see the frequent flyer glossary.
