How to buy hotel points: limits and break-even maths
Buying hotel points means paying a hotel loyalty programme, such as Marriott Bonvoy or Wyndham Rewards, to credit points to your own account, and both programmes treat those points as having no cash value and as non-transferable. [7] [5] Because the points cannot be turned back into cash, the question worth answering before you buy is whether they cost less than the room they will book. [3]

Key takeaways
- Marriott Bonvoy lists "purchasing Points" among the activities that count as Qualifying Activity, the activity that keeps an account's points alive. [7]
- Wyndham Rewards points expire four years after they are posted, and all accrued points can be cancelled after roughly 18 consecutive months without account activity. [5]
- Free nights at Wyndham Rewards properties require 7,500 to 30,000 points, and taxes and resort fees may still fall due on an award stay. [6] [3]
- To test a purchase, subtract the fees still charged on the award night from the cash rate, then divide by the number of points the night costs. [3]
How does buying hotel points work?
Marriott Bonvoy's programme rules name "purchasing Points" as an activity that counts towards a member's Qualifying Activity, alongside earning or redeeming points, completing a qualifying stay and converting points or miles with designated partners. [7] The same rules describe the sale or distribution of points as part of running the programme, whether the company carries it out itself or through third parties acting for it. [7]
Both programmes police where points come from. Marriott Bonvoy points have no cash value and may not be sold, bartered, transferred, assigned, exchanged or purchased except where the programme rules expressly allow it. [7] Wyndham Rewards states that its points are not the member's property, have no cash value, and cannot be sold, bartered or transferred by a member or any other party apart from the sponsor and its authorised agents. [5]
Airline currencies are a separate subject with their own purchase terms; the walk-through for that sits in buying miles for a specific trip.
Promotional bonuses sit on top of the programme rules rather than replacing them. Wyndham Rewards' current 4X points offer, for example, requires booking by 15 January and completion of the qualified stay by 19 January 2027, and caps the bonus at 15,000 points. [6]
How much is a hotel point worth against a free night?
At Wyndham Rewards, free nights at participating properties require 7,500 to 30,000 points, subject to blackout dates, blackout rates and other restrictions. [6] Redemption requirements are quoted per bedroom per night, and a member must hold enough points for every bedroom in the accommodation booked. [3] Taxes and resort fees may still apply on a free night, and points cannot be used to pay them. [3] The programme also offers discounted nights that mix points and cash, where the cash portion varies by property and date. [3]
That fee detail is what makes the arithmetic honest. Take the cash you would otherwise hand over for the same room, subtract the taxes and fees you will still pay on the award stay, and divide by the number of points the night costs; multiply by 100 for a figure in cents. [3]
For a worked example, take a free night priced at 15,000 points, which sits inside the published band. [6] With an illustrative cash rate of 150 and 20 of taxes and fees still collected on the award stay, the points are displacing 130, so 130 ÷ 15,000 × 100 comes to about 0.87 cents per point. [3] The same 130 spread over the bottom of the band, 7,500 points, is about 1.73 cents, and over the top, 30,000 points, about 0.43 cents. [6] [3]
Redemption requirements vary by property, so run both figures for the exact night you want rather than for an average. [3] The wider comparison is set out in hotel points value comparison, and the unit itself is defined under cents per point.
Do bought points keep an account alive?
At Marriott Bonvoy, members must have Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months to retain accumulated points, awards and other benefits, and purchasing points counts while gifting, transferring or receiving points from another member does not. [7] After 24 consecutive months without qualifying activity, all accumulated points and awards are forfeited and cannot be reinstated, and an account inactive for five consecutive years may be deactivated. [7]
At Wyndham Rewards, points expire four years after the date they are posted unless they are forfeited or cancelled earlier for inactivity, and all accrued points may be cancelled after a period of about, but never less than, 18 consecutive months without account activity. [5] Account activity means point earning, plus redemption or transfer activity that changes the point balance. [5] An account with no activity for 60 consecutive months may be terminated, with the remaining points forfeited. [5]
An award booked with those points has its own protection: at Marriott Bonvoy, an award redeemed before the points are forfeited stays valid unless it is cancelled after the points expiration date, in which case the points used for it expire where the member has not completed qualifying activity to extend that date. [7]
Exceptions and limits
- Points moved outside the permitted channels can be taken back. Marriott Bonvoy may void, confiscate or cancel points that are sold, transferred or obtained in breach of its rules [7], and Wyndham Rewards may terminate an account and forfeit all accrued points where points are sold, bartered, transferred or commercially distributed in breach of its terms. [5]
- Points posted in error can be removed. Wyndham Rewards may remove erroneously posted points from an account without notice. [5]
- The rules can change after you buy. Marriott reserves the right to change programme rules and reward levels with or without notice, even where that affects the value of points already accumulated [1], and its programme rules allow redemption rates and award availability to change on the same basis [7]; Wyndham Rewards may change point values and redemption levels at any time without notice. [5]
- A property can leave. If a Marriott participating property exits the programme, awards, promotions and offers for it stop being valid after the exit date, even for reservations made before that date. [7]
- The programme itself can end. Wyndham Rewards may terminate its programme on six months' notice, and accrued points are cancelled six months after a termination is announced. [5]
- Two carve-outs from expiry. Points earned by Wyndham Rewards Earner Premier cardmembers do not expire under the four-year rule while the account is open and in good standing [5], and points in Marriott Bonvoy Lifetime Elite Status accounts are not currently subject to expiration. [7]
Frequently asked questions
Can you buy hotel points from another member?
Not through the programmes themselves: Marriott Bonvoy points may not be sold, bartered or transferred except as its rules expressly allow [7], and Wyndham Rewards points cannot be sold, bartered or transferred by a member or any other party apart from the sponsor and its authorised agents. [5] Points moved outside those channels may be confiscated. [7]
Do bought hotel points expire?
They follow the programme's own timetable. Wyndham Rewards points expire four years after posting and can be cancelled after roughly 18 months without account activity [5], while Marriott Bonvoy requires Qualifying Activity every 24 months and counts a points purchase towards it. [7]
How many points does a hotel free night cost?
At Wyndham Rewards, free nights require 7,500 to 30,000 points per bedroom per night, with blackout dates and other restrictions applying [6] [3], and taxes and resort fees may still be charged on the award stay. [3]
When is buying points cheaper than paying cash?
When the points the night costs, valued at the price you paid for them, come out below the cash rate for the same room after subtracting taxes and fees you would still pay on the award [3]; the cents per point calculation is the quickest way to compare the two.
Does a points purchase count as account activity at Marriott Bonvoy?
Yes. Purchasing Points is listed among the Qualifying Activities that keep a Marriott Bonvoy account's points alive every 24 months. [7]
