How to understand Flying Blue Family: Miles and XP

Flying Blue is the loyalty programme of Air France, KLM and Transavia, and it keeps two separate currencies for a member: Miles, which are redeemed for award flights, upgrades and other paid options, and XP (Experience Points), which decide status. [2] [4] Status runs across five levels — Explorer, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Ultimate — and progress depends on how much XP a member collects inside a qualification period of up to 12 months. [4]

Key takeaways

  • Miles and XP do different jobs: Miles pay for awards and upgrades, while XP only counts towards status. [2] [4]
  • The five levels are Explorer, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Ultimate, and renewing Silver, Gold or Platinum takes 100, 180 or 300 XP respectively. [4]
  • A qualification period lasts up to 12 months and starts with the member's first Mile or first XP. [4]
  • On flights marketed by Air France, the Miles earned per euro spent depend on status, from 4 Miles for Explorer to 9 Miles for Ultimate. [2] [4]

Which flights earn Miles and XP?

XP is earned on eligible fares on eligible flights marketed or operated by Air France, KLM, Transavia, Aircalin, Air Corsica between Paris-Orly and Corsica, and the SkyTeam airline partners. [4] The separate UXP counter is earned only on flights marketed by Air France or KLM. [4]

On Air France, Miles and XP accrue on flights marketed by Air France whatever carrier operates them, including rail, bus and limousine services that carry an Air France flight number. [2] For rail, Miles accrue only where the train journey comes before or after an international flight departing from or arriving at Paris Charles de Gaulle or Paris Orly. [2] Miles are not earned on award tickets booked with Miles. [2]

How many Miles do you earn per euro on Air France flights?

On flights marketed by Air France, the Miles earned for each euro spent rise with status. [2] [4]

Different maths applies to Air France-marketed flights sold under tour-operator fares, and to Air France-operated flights marketed by Flying Blue partner airlines: there, Miles are built from the distance flown, the rate for the booking class in the programme's tables and any Elite bonus. [2] Where distance is used, Air France applies a minimum of 500 miles on domestic flights and 750 miles on international flights. [2] In the long-haul table, a First Class P booking earns 550% of the distance flown, while the lowest Economy booking classes listed — Q, E, T, N, R, V, X and G — earn 25%. [2]

How is XP calculated on a flight?

XP depends on the cabin flown and on the distance band of the flight. [4]

CabinDomesticMedium (under 2,000 miles)Long 1 (2,000–3,500 miles)Long 2 (3,500–5,000 miles)Long 3 (over 5,000 miles)

XP is counted segment by segment, so a connecting itinerary adds its legs together: Frankfurt to New York via Amsterdam in Economy earns 5 XP for the first leg plus 10 XP for the second, 15 XP in total, and Nice to Tokyo via Paris in Business earns 6 XP plus 36 XP, 42 XP in total. [4] On medium-haul routes, members earn 2 XP on Economy Basic fares and a further 2 XP on Economy Flex fares. [4]

XP can also be collected without flying: a contribution to Sustainable Aviation Fuel earns 1 XP for every €10 or 2,000 Miles contributed, and Miles used to support the roughly 25 charities the programme works with can maintain or upgrade status. [4]

How long do you have to earn XP?

A qualification period of up to 12 months starts when the member earns their first Mile or their first XP. [4] A level-up takes effect instantly, the XP required for the new level is deducted from the counter, and Elite members keep any surplus above that threshold, up to a maximum of 300 surplus XP. [4]

At the end of a period without a level-up, the member keeps the current level if the renewal threshold is met — 100 XP for Silver, 180 XP for Gold, 300 XP for Platinum — and the membership period at that level is renewed for 12 months. [4] If the threshold for the current level is missed, status falls by one level: an Explorer's counter resets to 0 XP, and a Platinum member steps down to Gold, then Silver, before becoming Explorer. [4] Platinum held for 10 years in a row becomes Platinum for Life, with no further requalification. [4]

Exceptions and limits

  • The XP values published in the flight-type table are indicative, and no rights can be derived from the estimated values shown there. [4]
  • Surplus XP kept after a level-up is capped at 300 XP for Elite members, which the programme describes as the equivalent of one extra year of Platinum status. [4]
  • The per-euro Miles rates apply to flights marketed by Air France; tour-operator fares and Air France-operated flights marketed by partner airlines are calculated from distance, booking class and Elite bonus instead. [2]
  • Rail segments earn Miles only when the train journey is attached to an international flight departing from or arriving at Paris Charles de Gaulle or Paris Orly, and the minimum distance floors of 500 miles domestic and 750 miles international apply where distance drives the calculation. [2]
  • Award tickets booked with Miles do not earn Miles, and UXP accrues only on flights marketed by Air France or KLM. [2] [4]
