How to earn and retain Korean Air SKYPASS status

Korean Air SKYPASS status is the tiered elite membership a traveller holds in Korean Air's SKYPASS programme, sitting on a ladder that runs from SKYPASS Club through the Morning Calm tiers to Million Miler Club. [3] [5] Korean Air's published pages on the integration with Asiana explain how Asiana Club tiers are matched to SKYPASS tiers and how a member's tier is reassessed when Asiana mileage is converted, but they do not publish the ordinary qualification thresholds or the qualification period for each tier. [3] [5]

Key takeaways

  • SKYPASS elite status is a ladder of named tiers: SKYPASS Club, Morning Calm Club, Morning Calm Select Club, Morning Calm Premium Club and Million Miler Club, in the context of the Korean Air and Asiana integration. [3] [5]
  • Asiana-operated flight miles count when Korean Air evaluates elite eligibility, and a member's tier is reassessed by combining those flight miles with existing Korean Air qualification mileage. [3] [4]
  • A reassessment can only move a member up: a higher combined result produces an upgrade, while a result that is the same or lower leaves the current tier and its validity period unchanged. [3]

How status is earned and renewed

Korean Air assesses elite status on qualification mileage, and during the integration with Asiana it also takes Asiana Airlines-operated flight mileage into account. The programme states that achieving Elite member status is easier because Asiana-operated flight miles are included when elite eligibility is evaluated. [4] When Asiana mileage is converted, Korean Air conducts an Elite member tier reassessment that combines Asiana Airlines-operated flight mileage with the Korean Air qualification mileage the member already holds. [3]

The reassessment is written as a floor rather than a cut-off. If the tier calculated from the combined mileage is higher than the tier the member currently holds, the member is upgraded to the reassessed tier; if the combined performance tier is the same or lower, the current tier and its validity period remain unchanged. [3] In other words, this particular reassessment does not take a tier away from a member who performs below it. [3]

Two moments are described. Elite member status matching happens at the time of integration, and the Elite member tier reassessment happens at the time of SKYPASS mileage conversion. [3] For the threshold structures other airlines publish, see status thresholds in major programmes and the term elite status.

Tier names and Asiana Club matching

On integration, Asiana Airlines' Elite member tier is matched to a similar Korean Air Elite member tier, and the existing Elite member period is maintained. [5] The published matching is:

  • Asiana Platinum to Million Miler Club. [5]
  • Asiana Diamond Plus to Morning Calm Premium Club. [5]
  • Asiana Diamond Plus (Limited Term) to Morning Calm Select Club. [5]
  • Asiana Diamond to Morning Calm Select Club, which Korean Air describes in this context as a new tier. [5]
  • Asiana Gold to Morning Calm Club. [5]

Where a member holds both an Asiana Club tier and a Korean Air tier, the higher of the two determines the final tier. Korean Air gives the example of an Asiana Diamond tier combined with a Korean Air Morning Calm Club tier, which produces Morning Calm Select Club, and an Asiana Diamond Plus (Lifetime) tier combined with Morning Calm Premium Club, which stays at Morning Calm Premium Club. [5] The combined ladder is set out on the SKYPASS programme page.

What a reassessment looks like

Korean Air's page shows worked examples of the combined-mileage calculation, and states that results vary with the member's actual tier and performance. [3] A current SKYPASS Club member with 10,000 Asiana-operated flight miles and 40,000 qualification miles is shown reaching Morning Calm Club. [3] A current Morning Calm Select Club member with 450,000 Asiana-operated flight miles and 70,000 qualification miles is shown reaching Morning Calm Premium Club. [3] A current Morning Calm Premium Club member with 50,000 Asiana-operated flight miles and 960,000 qualification miles is shown reaching Million Miler Club. [3] A current Morning Calm Select Club member with 30,000 Asiana-operated flight miles and 20,000 qualification miles is shown calculating to Morning Calm Club, with the final tier remaining Morning Calm Select Club because the calculated tier is lower. [3] These figures illustrate individual cases; the page does not present them as a threshold table, so they should not be read as the mileage required for each tier. [3]

Because the calculation depends on converting Asiana mileage, the conversion rate matters to the total. Flight accrued mileage converts at 100 Asiana miles to 100 SKYPASS miles, while partner accrued mileage converts at 100 Asiana miles to 82 SKYPASS miles, and any decimal fraction is rounded up. [4] The conversion calculator on the page produces an estimate that Korean Air says may differ from the actual mileage converted. [4] Conversion is handled on the Korean Air website through the Asiana Mileage page once integration is complete. [4]

Exceptions and limits

  • Asiana benefits end. After the integration date, only Korean Air Elite member tiers are operated and Asiana Airlines' Elite member benefits are no longer provided, although coupons and vouchers received with Asiana Elite status before integration can be used until their expiration date. [5]
  • Two mileage balances. Asiana Club mileage is operated separately for ten years after integration and is held in the member's SKYPASS account as Asiana mileage with its existing balance and validity period; it can be used but not accrued after the integration date, and new mileage accrues only as SKYPASS mileage. [6]
  • Award reach. Asiana mileage can be used for award tickets, seat upgrade awards and Cash and Miles on routes operated by Korean Air, applying Asiana's existing redemption standards, but not on SkyTeam or non-SkyTeam partner airlines. [6] Cash and Miles allows a minimum of 100 miles up to 40% of the fare on a Korean Air ticket. [6]
  • No mixing. The two mileage types cannot be combined for one award; a member who wants to use both must convert Asiana mileage to SKYPASS mileage, conversion cannot be cancelled, and the converted mileage keeps its previous validity. [6] Any Asiana mileage left at the end of the ten-year period is converted automatically at the fixed rate. [6]
