How to use airport lounges at Kuala Lumpur KLIA

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) is the home hub of Malaysia Airlines, the national carrier of Malaysia and a member of the oneworld alliance, and it is where the alliance's lounge access policy decides which travellers can use a lounge before departure. [2] [3]

Key takeaways

  • Malaysia Airlines is the national carrier of Malaysia, a member of oneworld, and operates from its hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). [2]
  • The test for oneworld lounge access is the flight rather than the airport: you must be departing on a flight that is both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. [3]
  • Emerald tier gets First Class, Business Class or frequent flyer lounges; Sapphire tier gets Business Class or frequent flyer lounges. [3]
  • Emerald and Sapphire members may each invite one guest, and the guest must also be on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld carrier. [3]

Who can use a oneworld lounge when flying from Kuala Lumpur?

oneworld publishes a single access policy for its member airlines' lounges, and it says travellers can reach nearly 700 airport lounges through their oneworld Priority Tier Benefits. [3] To be eligible, you must be departing on a flight that is both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. [3] Eligible customers can also use a lounge operated by a third party where the airline they are travelling with has contracted that lounge. [3] The alliance's own branded lounges are at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Seoul-Incheon International Airport; elsewhere the tier and cabin rules below decide which member-airline or contracted lounge a traveller may enter. [3]

By tier status. Emerald tier travellers enjoy exclusive access to First Class and Business Class airport lounges on all eligible flights, and Sapphire tier travellers have access to Business Class lounges. [3] Members of a oneworld airline frequent flyer programme with the equivalent of Emerald or Sapphire status can use lounges offered by oneworld airlines when departing on any flight marketed and operated by any oneworld member airline, whatever cabin class they fly. [3] The Sapphire Business Class entitlement does not include Qantas Domestic Business Lounges. [3] You should be ready to show your boarding pass and a frequent flyer membership card carrying oneworld Emerald or Sapphire status. [3]

Access is available on the day of travel, or before 06:00 the following day, at the airport from which the eligible oneworld flight departs. [3] Some lounges get busy at peak times, and access may be restricted as a result. [3] Qantas describes the same entitlement for its own members: Platinum and Gold Frequent Flyer members, equivalent to oneworld Emerald and Sapphire, and travellers in a First or Business Class cabin on any oneworld member airline, excluding oneworld connect partners, can use more than 650 airport lounges worldwide. [6] [7]

What do First and Business Class passengers get?

Flying First or Business Class with any oneworld member airline brings access to the equivalent class of lounge regardless of frequent flyer status, although exclusions apply. [3] A First Class passenger may use a Business Class or frequent flyer lounge when a First Class lounge is not available. [3]

Connections. First and Business Class customers connecting on the same day, or before 06:00 the following day, can use a lounge when travelling between an international long haul flight and an international short haul or domestic flight, in either direction. [3] oneworld defines an international long haul flight as an international flight marketed and operated by any oneworld carrier with a scheduled flight time longer than five hours. [3] Access is decided on the long haul ticketed flight, whichever class is booked on the short sector, and you must be able to show a boarding pass for First or Business Class travel on that long haul flight. [3]

Can you bring a guest or children into a KLIA lounge?

Emerald and Sapphire members may invite one guest to join them in the lounge, and the guest must also be travelling on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld carrier. [3] First Class passengers may invite one guest on the same condition. [3]

Infants under two are not counted as a guest when travelling with an eligible adult. [3] A child travelling as an unaccompanied minor aged between 2 and 11 who is eligible for lounge access must be accompanied by an adult, who is counted as their guest. [3] A young passenger aged between 12 and 17 who is eligible does not need an accompanying adult, except where local laws mandate otherwise. [3] Some lounges offer self-service alcohol, and local liquor laws may restrict entry for people under a set age — 12 to 19 in Japan and up to 21 in the United States, for example. [3]

House rules. A lounge operator may refuse entry for statutory, regulatory or airport policy reasons, including health and safety policies and fire regulations. [3] Guests must be appropriately dressed and behave appropriately, food and drink must not be taken out of the lounge, and a no-smoking policy applies at all times. [3] Neither the lounge operator nor a third-party lounge provider is obliged to make flight announcements, so watch the departure boards yourself. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Arrivals lounges are excluded from the policy, as are spa and pre-flight dining facilities and British Airways' Concorde lounges. [3]
  • American Airlines' and British Airways' Chelsea lounge at JFK Terminal 8, and Hawaiian Airlines Premier Clubs, are not included in the oneworld lounge access policy. [3]
  • Paid lounge programmes run by Alaska Airlines, American Airlines and Qantas are not part of the oneworld agreement, and members of those programmes are not entitled to lounge access under it. [3]
  • American Airlines AAdvantage members, whatever their tier or cabin, are not eligible for oneworld member airline lounge access when travelling solely on North American flights between the United States, Canada, Mexico (except Mexico City), the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean, or solely on domestic United States flights, with some exceptions. [3]
  • Qatar Airways "Business Lite" fares and Finnair "Business Light" fares are not eligible for lounge access. [3]
  • Entry to a Qantas lounge is subject to the Qantas lounge entry terms and conditions, and entry to a non-Qantas branded lounge is subject to the operator's own eligibility and entry requirements. [6] [7]

Terminal position and opening hours are specific to each lounge, so check the operating airline's own lounge page for the facility you plan to use before you travel.
