How to respond to a points devaluation: checklist
A points devaluation response checklist is a fixed sequence for judging an award-pricing change before you spend or move miles: read the programme's current rules and any stated effective date, identify what the rules allow to change on the award side, check how issued awards are treated, review the transfer rules, and compare alternative redemptions. [7] In United Airlines' MileagePlus programme — the worked example here — the published rules allow mileage levels, award amounts and award availability to change at any time, with or without notice. [7]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Judge a change from the programme's own rules page: United says the version published on united.com is the current and final authority and supersedes earlier or conflicting versions. [7]
- United may raise the miles, cash, applicable co-pays or number of certificates needed for any award, add blackout dates and limit award seats, with or without notice. [7]
- Once an award ticket or other award is issued, a service charge may be imposed for each change or cancellation requested, and the award is valid only to destinations served both when it was issued and when the member departs. [7]
How do you find the effective date of a programme change?
Start where the programme itself points. United's MileagePlus rules state that the most current version is the one on united.com, that it is the final authority, and that it supersedes any prior or conflicting version. [7]
United reserves the right to change the rules, benefits, conditions of participation, Premier qualification criteria or mileage levels, in whole or in part, at any time and with or without notice, even though changes may affect the value of status levels, benefits, mileage or certificates already accumulated. [7]
A programme can also state a specific effective date for a change. United's Premier qualification shifted to Premier qualifying points (PQP) and Premier qualifying flights (PQF) with effect from 1 January 2020, and from that date members no longer achieved Premier status on the basis of Premier qualifying miles (PQM), Premier qualifying segments (PQS) or Premier qualifying dollars (PQD). [7]
While you have the date in front of you, clear anything the programme still owes you. Claims for mileage or Premier Qualifying Credits must reach United within twelve months of the date the credit was claimed to be earned, and some partners set different retro-credit claim periods. [7]
What exactly changes when an award chart is redrawn?
United sets the amount, structure, availability, process and other criteria for award redemption, and all of those are subject to modification, cancellation or limitation at United's discretion, with or without notice. [7] The rules also describe the direction a change can take: the mileage required for an award may be substantially increased or decreased, any award may be withdrawn, and restrictions on an award or its redemption may be imposed at any time. [7]
| Award element | What the rules allow |
|---|---|
| Miles needed | May be substantially increased or decreased for any award. [7] |
| Cash, co-pays and certificates | The cash required, applicable co-pays or number of certificates for any award may be increased. [7] |
| Blackout dates | An unlimited number of blackout dates may be added. [7] |
| Award seats | The number of award seats available to any or all destinations may be limited. [7] |
| Structure and process | The amount, structure, availability, process and other criteria for redemption may be modified, cancelled or limited. [7] |
Members may not rely on an award or an award level staying available, and may not be able to obtain every offered award or use awards to every destination or on every flight. [7] For the arithmetic of a specific route, see award chart devaluation impact analysis.
Are award tickets you already booked affected?
Once an award ticket or other award is issued, a service charge may be imposed for each change or cancellation the member requests. [7]
Cancelling does not always return everything. Where a redeemed award is later cancelled or returned in line with the rules in force at that time, or the partner's rules, the award miles taken are redeposited to the member's account subject to a service charge, and some awards are not eligible for redeposit of miles and state so. [7]
Validity depends on the network as well as the date. Awards for travel are valid only to destinations served both when the award ticket is issued and when the member departs, and neither United nor its partners is liable for schedule changes that cancel service to a destination. [7] MileagePlus award tickets may also be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, contract of carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier operating the flight. [7]
On partner awards, routing and destinations are determined by the individual travel partners, which are independent entities whose products and services United does not control. [7]
What do the rules say about transferring miles?
United's rules allow accrued mileage to be transferred to another MileagePlus account through United's Transfer Miles Program, and members must comply with the Transfer Miles Program Terms and Conditions published on united.com. [7]
Outside that programme, mileage, benefits, certificates, PlusPoints, Premier Qualifying Credits, account numbers, status and awards may not be transferred or assigned except as expressly permitted by United in writing or under a programme United fully authorises or sponsors. [7] On the death or divorce of a member, United may, in its sole discretion, credit all or a portion of the member's accrued mileage to authorised persons on documentation satisfactory to United and payment of applicable fees. [7]
Mileage redemption activity, including the processing of redemption requests, may be prohibited in an account or suspended for a period after the account is opened. [7] Award miles and Premier Qualifying Credits are not credited for award travel, including tickets purchased with a combination of miles and money. [7]
Which alternative redemptions should you compare?
Non-air award redemptions carry additional terms and conditions, including any set by the partner providing the award. [7]
Using the miles for someone else is another option inside the rules: awards may be issued in the member's name or in the name and for the use of another person, for non-commercial purposes only, and only after the member validates the account with a password or other security measure United has in place at the time of the request. [7]
Whatever you pick, price it for your own dates and cabin, because a level that is published today can move again. [7] The term itself is defined in points devaluation.
Exceptions and limits
- Mileage stays in the account until redeemed or forfeited. Mileage stays in the account until it is redeemed or forfeited, for example under the rules, the contract of carriage or fare rules, for prohibited conduct, under applicable law, on a member-requested closure, on the death of a member, or when a member fails to answer repeated communications about the account. [7]
- An account review can suspend activity. Prohibited conduct can lead to termination of membership and to removal or cancellation of accrued mileage and of pending or outstanding award redemptions [7], and while an account is audited or investigated United may delay or suspend all activity, including mileage redemptions. [7]
- Promotional offers can be selective. United reserves the right to make bonus and promotional offers selectively available to certain members, based on flight activity, partner activity, geographic location, Premier status level, mileage accumulation or other factors. [7]
- The programme itself can end. United may terminate the programme in whole or in part at any time [7], and no amount of mileage or status gives a member a vested right to an award or a Premier benefit. [7]
Frequently asked questions
Does a programme have to give notice before award prices change?
No. United's rules allow the programme, benefits, qualification criteria and mileage levels to change at any time, with or without notice, even where the change affects miles already accumulated. [7]
Is an award ticket I already booked protected from a devaluation?
An issued award is subject to the rules for changes, cancellations and destination validity. Changes and cancellations may carry a service charge, and the award is valid only to destinations served both at issuance and at departure. [7]
Can I move miles to another account before the change lands?
United's rules allow accrued mileage to be transferred to another MileagePlus account through the Transfer Miles Program, and members must comply with that programme's terms and conditions published on united.com. [7] Outside that programme, mileage, benefits, certificates, PlusPoints, Premier Qualifying Credits, account numbers, status and awards may not be transferred or assigned except as expressly permitted by United in writing or under a programme it fully authorises or sponsors. [7]
Do award prices ever come down again?
The rules allow it: the mileage required may be substantially increased or decreased, awards may be withdrawn and restrictions imposed at any time. [7]
Does a status match cover me while award prices move?
It runs on its own timetable. United's 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge takes applications between 8 January and 21 December 2026, and matched Premier status lasts 120 days from the activating flight unless the required PQF and PQP are earned within the challenge period. [8]
