Premium economy award programmes compared
Premium economy award programmes are frequent flyer schemes that let you spend miles in the cabin between economy and business, either as a reward seat or as a points upgrade. What separates them is the structure each programme publishes: Qantas Frequent Flyer sells Classic Flight Rewards at a fixed points amount year-round and lists Premium Economy as one of the cabins in which those rewards can be upgraded, while United's MileagePlus Rules leave the amount, structure and availability of awards to United's discretion. [5] [9]

Key takeaways
- Qantas Frequent Flyer prices Classic Flight Rewards at a fixed points amount all year round with limited availability, and prices Classic Plus Flight Rewards on a fluctuating basis with wider availability but only on Qantas. [5]
- Qantas lists Economy and Premium Economy as the cabins in which Classic Flight Rewards can be upgraded, and members can request a points upgrade from Economy to Premium Economy on a Classic Flight Reward booking. [5]
- United's MileagePlus Rules place the amount, structure and availability of awards in United's hands and let United withdraw any award or add restrictions at any time. [9]
- Award travel on partner airlines follows the partner's terms; United says the individual partner decides routing and destinations for award travel on its flights. [9]
What makes premium economy a separate award cabin?
Premium economy sits between the two cabins that Qantas Frequent Flyer uses in its points upgrades: the programme allows upgrades from Economy to Premium Economy and from Premium Economy to Business on a Classic Flight Reward booking. [5] Both of its reward types, Classic Flight Rewards and Classic Plus Flight Rewards, are upgradeable and can be combined between cabins and fare types in the same booking. [5]
Fixed versus fluctuating. Classic Flight Rewards carry a fixed points amount all year round, come with limited availability and reach more than 1,300 destinations on Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld member airlines and other partner airlines. [5] Classic Plus Flight Rewards move with normal airfares through the year, are more widely available and are limited to Qantas flights. [5] Both types carry the same reward change and cancellation fees, and neither earns Qantas Points or Status Credits, except that Points Club and Points Club Plus members can earn Status Credits on eligible Classic Flight Reward bookings. [5]

Set by the airline. United's MileagePlus Rules leave the framework to United: the airline establishes the amount, structure, availability, process and other criteria for award redemption, and those terms may be modified, cancelled or limited at United's discretion with or without notice. [9] The rules also let United increase the miles or cash required for any award, add blackout dates and limit the number of award seats available to any or all destinations. [9]
How do you book a premium economy reward with Qantas Points?
Qantas sets out a short path for Classic Flight Rewards: sign in to the Qantas Frequent Flyer account, search for flights and select "Rewards", look for flights marked with the red Reward ribbon, then choose the flights and complete the booking. [5] The "All Flights" view allows a Classic Flight Reward to be combined with Qantas cash fares in the same booking. [5]
Classic Flight Rewards can be booked up to 353 days in advance. [5] On the Qantas website, booking closes two hours before departure for flights within Australia and four hours before departure for international flights; through Qantas Contact Centres the cut-off is at least 24 hours before scheduled departure, and some locations require earlier booking. [5] A Reward Assistance fee applies to bookings made through the contact centres and is waived for Platinum One members. [5]
Taxes, fees and carrier charges are payable on top of the points, by an accepted payment card. [5] For Classic Flight Rewards on Qantas, Jetstar and selected partner airlines departing Australia, the Qantas website lets members pay those charges with points on the payment page, excluding local airport fees collected at check-in; all other Classic Flight Rewards require an approved payment card. [5]
How do premium economy upgrade requests work?
On a Classic Flight Reward booking, Qantas Points can be used to request an upgrade from Economy to Premium Economy, from Economy to Business or from Premium Economy to Business. [5] Requests may not always succeed, and points are deducted only if the upgrade is confirmed. [5]
Classic Upgrade Rewards can be requested on Classic Flight Rewards in Economy and Premium Economy, on Classic Plus Flight Rewards in Economy and Premium Economy, on eligible paid and confirmed Qantas domestic and international flights with a QF flight number, and from time to time on codeshares operated by another carrier that carries a QF flight number. [5] Upgrades are subject to capacity controls with limited availability and are not offered from all fare types. [5]
How is partner premium economy space handled?
Classic Flight Rewards reach more than 1,300 destinations on Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld member airlines and selected Qantas Frequent Flyer partner airlines and affiliates, and a member can book one for themselves or an eligible family member. [5] The oneworld version of the reward is narrower: it is limited to oneworld member airlines and their affiliates, cannot include travel on any other airline, is based on total distance travelled or on return flights rather than one-way trips, is capped at 35,000 miles on one itinerary and must include travel on at least two oneworld member airlines other than Qantas. [5]
On the United side, the partner sets the map: routing and destinations for award travel on airline partners are determined by the individual travel partners, and partner offers are governed by the partner's own terms and conditions. [9] A MileagePlus award ticket may also be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, contract of carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which the travel is scheduled. [9]
Exceptions and limits
- Classic Flight Rewards are subject to capacity controls, and some flights may have no reward seats at all. [5]
- Mixing a reward with a cash fare brings the stricter rules with it: when non-reward fares are combined with flight rewards, the most restrictive fare condition of the non-reward fare applies to the reward segments for changes, cancellations and refunds. [5]
- Qantas points requirements, taxes, fees and carrier charges are quoted at the time of booking and are subject to change; Qantas states that the figures on its Classic Flight Rewards page are accurate as at 10 October 2025. [5]
- Qantas Loyalty will retire the Points Club programme from 8 December 2026, and members who hold Points Club or Points Club Plus on or before that date keep their benefits until the end of their next membership year. [5]
- United may impose a service charge for each change or cancellation a member requests after an award ticket is issued. [9] Miles taken for a cancelled or returned award are redeposited subject to a service charge, and some awards are not eligible for redeposit at all. [9]
- United award travel is valid only to destinations served both when the award ticket is issued and at departure, and neither United nor its partners are liable for schedule changes that remove service to a destination. [9]
