How to earn China Southern Sky Pearl Club elite status
Sky Pearl Club is the frequent flyer programme of China Southern Airlines, and its elite tiers — Sky Pearl Silver, Sky Pearl Gold and Sky Pearl Platinum — are earned by reaching an upgrade-kilometer target or a qualifying-sector target inside a calendar qualification year. [3] The ladder starts at 40,000 upgrade kilometers or 20 qualifying sectors for Silver and rises to 160,000 kilometers or 80 sectors for Platinum. [3]

Key takeaways
- China Southern assesses elite tiers on a qualification year running from 1 January to 31 December, and either the upgrade-kilometer figure or the sector figure is enough for a tier — you do not need both. [3]
- Renewal uses the same numbers as the first qualification, with the previous qualification year's totals recalculated before a card expires. [3]
- A card runs from the date the tier is assessed to 28 February of the third year, counting the assessment year as the first. [3]
- Lounge access, extra baggage and priority services apply on flights that China Southern both markets and operates. [3]
What are the Sky Pearl Club tiers and thresholds?
The programme has four levels. From highest to lowest they are Sky Pearl Platinum, Sky Pearl Gold, Sky Pearl Silver and the base Sky Pearl membership card, and children aged 2 to 11 are enrolled on a Little Sky Pearl card. [3]
| Tier | Upgrade kilometers | Qualifying sectors |
|---|---|---|
| Sky Pearl Silver | 40,000 | 20 |
| Sky Pearl Gold | 80,000 | 40 |
| Sky Pearl Platinum | 160,000 | 80 |
A member who reaches the mileage figure or the sector figure for a tier during the qualification year is assessed at that tier for the following year. [3]
Upgrade miles are the mileage credited for eligible flights and cabins of China Southern and its designated airline partners, and the definition leaves out promotional miles, spending with non-airline partners and elite bonus miles. [3] Qualifying sectors are the basic flight sectors credited for those same flights and cabins. [3]
The programme also states that China Southern will introduce a new tier assessment system based on spend, and asks members to watch for the details. [3]
How are upgrade miles and qualifying sectors calculated for a flight?
China Southern's earning table ties each cabin and booking class to three figures: the share of standard mileage credited as award miles, the share credited as upgrade miles, and the number of qualifying sectors credited for the segment. [3] Base flight mileage is the standard distance between origin and destination multiplied by the cabin ratio, and a city pair shorter than 500 kilometers is counted as 500 kilometers. [3]
Sector credit scales with the booking class, from three qualifying sectors for the highest cabin down to fractions of a sector and to zero for the deepest discount classes. [3]
Several ticket types earn nothing: group tickets, award tickets, tickets sold through travel agents or at other special discounts, free tickets, and charter or special-flight tickets. [3] An award upgrade, a promotional free upgrade or an involuntary upgrade is credited at the cabin that was paid for. [3] If an involuntary change alters the routing, the flights are credited on the itinerary originally purchased. [3]
Missing credit can be claimed up to six months from the date of travel, and a flight from one year that is credited during the next still counts towards the year in which it was flown. [3] On any single segment a member may credit only one airline programme, so the same flight cannot build two accounts. [3]
Which partner flights count towards Sky Pearl Club status?
China Southern lists Xiamen Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Vietnam Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Air France, KLM, China Airlines, Mandarin Airlines, Korean Air, Aeroflot, Saudia, Middle East Airlines, Air Europa and Czech Airlines as carriers on which Sky Pearl Club miles can be earned, and refers members to the programme website for each carrier's rates. [3]
Some arrangements are narrower than the list suggests. Sichuan Airlines flights earn on domestic services only, China Airlines flights earn under the CI code on all routes, and Mandarin Airlines flights under the AE code earn only between Chinese mainland and Taiwan Region of China. [3]
Upgrade miles are defined by eligible flights and cabins of China Southern and its designated airline partners, so the rate published for each partner decides what a partner flight adds to a tier target. [3]
The rules treat partner flights in two ways. One clause restricts elite member benefits to flights where China Southern is both the marketing and the operating carrier, while another says Platinum, Gold and Silver members can receive elite services on partner-operated or codeshare flights and points to the programme website for the detail. [3]
How long does Sky Pearl Club status last and how is it renewed?
China Southern assesses a new tier from the qualification year's upgrade miles or sectors, and sets the card's validity from the date of assessment to 28 February of the third year, counting the assessment year as the first. [3] A tier assessed in 2026 would therefore run to 28 February 2028. [3]
Before a Platinum, Gold or Silver card expires, China Southern recalculates the previous qualification year's upgrade miles and sectors and renews the tier if the standard is met; the renewal standard is the same as the upgrade standard. [3]
Elite members also collect extra "elite miles" on eligible flights, set at 15% for Silver, 30% for Gold and 50% for Platinum, worked out from the tier and the route's standard mileage and credited only to award miles, not to upgrade miles. [3]
Mileage expiry is suspended while a member holds an elite tier, and a member who drops back to the base card keeps a 12-month protection period before expiry resumes. [3]
What lounge and airport benefits come with Sky Pearl Club status?
| Benefit | Silver | Gold | Platinum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lounge access | Member only | Member plus one guest | Member plus two guests |
| Extra free baggage | 10 kg / 1 piece | 20 kg / 1 piece | 30 kg / 1 piece |
| Priority check-in, baggage and boarding | Member only | Member plus one companion | Member plus two companions |
Where an airport has no dedicated elite lounge, Platinum may take two companions into the first class lounge, Gold one companion, and Silver may use the business class lounge alone. [3] Lounge service is offered only where China Southern operates the lounge or holds a lounge service agreement, and the standard varies by airport. [3]
The extra baggage allowance is granted at check-in and is not printed in the free baggage field of the ticket; on piece-count flights the weight and size limits follow the cabin of the ticket. [3] At selected airports, fast-track security and a car to remote stands are further Platinum benefits. [3]
Exceptions and limits
- Children. Little Sky Pearl members aged 2 to 11 cannot hold an elite tier and cannot accrue upgrade miles or qualifying sectors. [3]
- Sectors without miles, and miles without sectors. The deepest discount booking classes credit no qualifying sector at all, so a member can add upgrade miles without moving the sector count. [3]
- Late claims. Because a retro claim counts towards the travel year, a flight credited months later can change a past year's totals, and the claim window closes six months after travel. [3]
- Merged accounts. When two Sky Pearl accounts are combined, the transferred miles are recalculated on the receiving card's tier, so elite bonus miles can be added or removed by the merge. [3]
- Partner gap. Miles on the partner airlines above do not by themselves deliver the airport benefits in the table, because a separate clause ties elite member benefits to flights China Southern markets and operates. [3]
- Language. China Southern states that where language versions of its rules differ, the Chinese text prevails. [3]
Frequently asked questions
How many sectors do I need for Sky Pearl Silver?
Twenty qualifying sectors in a qualification year, or 40,000 upgrade kilometers — either one is enough on its own. [3]
Do partner flights count towards Sky Pearl Club elite status?
Miles can be earned on the partner airlines the programme lists, and upgrade miles are defined on China Southern and designated partner flights and cabins, with each carrier's rate published by Sky Pearl Club. [3] The airport benefits in the published table are tied to flights China Southern markets and operates. [3]
How long does Sky Pearl Gold last?
A tier runs from the date of assessment to 28 February of the third year, with the assessment year counted as the first, and renewal is judged on the previous qualification year against the same thresholds. [3]
Can a child hold Sky Pearl Club elite status?
No. Little Sky Pearl members aged 2 to 11 cannot hold an elite tier and cannot accrue upgrade miles or qualifying sectors. [3]
Do cheap economy tickets earn qualifying sectors?
The booking class sets the sector credit, and the deepest discount classes credit zero sectors even where some mileage is still earned. [3]
