How to use the Sydney Airport Qantas and oneworld lounges

Sydney Airport lounges here means the Qantas-run lounges at Sydney Airport — the Sydney Qantas Club, the Sydney International Business Lounge and the Qantas First lounge — plus the oneworld access rules that admit Emerald and Sapphire members and First or Business Class passengers. Qantas says access to its lounges is based on class of travel, Qantas Frequent Flyer membership tier, or Qantas Club, oneworld or Emirates membership status, and that travellers can also use a Complimentary Lounge Invitation, buy a single-visit Qantas Lounge Pass if available, or join the Qantas Club. Key takeaways

  • Qantas lists class of travel, Qantas Frequent Flyer tier, Qantas Club, oneworld or Emirates membership status, Complimentary Lounge Invitations and single-visit Qantas Lounge Passes as the ways into its lounges. [2] [4]
  • oneworld Emerald and Sapphire status works whatever cabin you fly, as long as you depart on a flight marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. [3]
  • The Sydney International Business Lounge is in a temporary space near gate 24 while a new lounge is built, due for completion in early 2027. [2] [4]
  • Paid lounge programmes run by Qantas, Alaska Airlines and American Airlines sit outside the oneworld agreement. [3]

Which lounges are at Sydney Airport?

Qantas describes a Joey Club zone in the Sydney Qantas Club, built with LEGO Australia for ages 18 months and above, with a DUPLO brick pit, gaming stations, a quiet zone with a book nook and colouring tables, and photo spots. [2] [4]

The Sydney International Business Lounge is being rebuilt, with the new lounge due for completion in early 2027 and planned to bring a refreshed food and beverage menu, a 30% increase in seating and an outdoor terrace with views of the Sydney skyline. [2] [4] While construction is under way the lounge has moved to a temporary space near gate 24, and Qantas says that in peak periods you may be reaccommodated in an alternative lounge. [2] [4]

Qantas says its First lounges feature in-lounge sommeliers, with the LaGaia spa in Sydney and Melbourne. [5] Across the network it also says Aesop amenities are provided in First lounge shower suites and bathrooms, Grown Alchemist products in Business lounge shower suites and bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi in all Qantas lounges. [2] [4] The Qantas dress code is smart casual, including appropriate footwear. [2] [4]

How do you get into a Qantas lounge at Sydney Airport?

Qantas says access is based on the class of travel, your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership tier, or your Qantas Club, oneworld or Emirates membership status, and that you can also use a Complimentary Lounge Invitation, buy a single-visit Qantas Lounge Pass if available, or join the Qantas Club. [2] [4] Entry to a Qantas-branded lounge is subject to Qantas's lounge entry terms and conditions, while entry to a lounge that is not Qantas-branded is subject to the operator's own eligibility and entry requirements. [2] [4]

Qantas Platinum Frequent Flyer is the equivalent of oneworld Emerald and Qantas Gold Frequent Flyer the equivalent of oneworld Sapphire. [2] [4] Qantas says either tier, or a First or Business Class cabin on any oneworld member airline, opens more than 650 airport lounges worldwide, provided you are departing on a flight that is both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline; oneworld connect partners are excluded from the cabin route. oneworld applies the status route whatever cabin you fly: members of a oneworld airline programme holding the equivalent of Emerald or Sapphire can use oneworld airlines' lounges when departing on any flight marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. [3] Be ready to show your boarding pass and a frequent flyer membership card with Emerald or Sapphire status; access is available on the day of travel, or before 06:00 the following day, at the airport from which the eligible oneworld flight departs. [3] oneworld warns that some lounges get busy at peak times and that access may be restricted as a result. [3]

A traveller in the main cabin therefore relies on one of the other published routes: Qantas Frequent Flyer tier, Qantas Club, oneworld or Emirates membership status, a Complimentary Lounge Invitation or a purchased Qantas Lounge Pass. [2] [4] If you are working out which route applies to your booking, the oneworld lounge access rules and the lounge access checklist walk through the same conditions step by step.

What do First and Business Class passengers and guests get?

Flying First or Business Class with a oneworld member airline gives access to the equivalent class of lounge regardless of frequent flyer status, and a First Class passenger may use a Business Class or frequent flyer lounge when no First Class lounge is available. [3] Qantas states the same class-of-travel route for its own network, again on flights marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. [2] [4]

Connecting passengers keep access when they connect on the same day of travel, or before 06:00 the following day, between an international long haul flight and an international short haul or domestic flight. [3] oneworld defines an international long haul flight as an international flight marketed and operated by a oneworld carrier with a scheduled flight time longer than five hours, and decides access on the ticketed long-haul class, so the long-haul boarding pass is what you show before the short sector. [3]

On guests, Emerald and Sapphire members may invite one guest, and that guest must also be travelling on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld carrier. [3] First Class passengers may invite one guest on the same condition. [3] Infants under two travelling with an eligible adult are not counted as a guest. [3] A child aged two to 11 flying as an unaccompanied minor who is eligible for lounge access must be accompanied by an adult, and that adult counts as the guest, while a young passenger aged 12 to 17 does not need an accompanying adult unless local law requires one. [3] Some lounges offer self-service alcohol and local liquor laws may restrict entry by age — oneworld gives 12 to 19 in Japan and up to 21 in the United States as examples. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Paid lounge programmes. oneworld states that the paid lounge programmes offered by Qantas, Alaska Airlines and American Airlines are not part of the oneworld agreement, and that members of those programmes are not entitled to lounge access under it; a Qantas Lounge Pass or Qantas Club membership is instead a route into Qantas's own lounges on Qantas's terms. [2] [3] [4]
  • Domestic Business Lounges. Sapphire tier access to Business Class lounges explicitly does not include Qantas Domestic Business Lounges. [3]
  • Fare type. Business Class does not guarantee entry: Qatar Airways "Business Lite" fares and Finnair "Business Light" fares are not eligible for lounge access under the oneworld policy. [3]
  • Facilities outside the policy. Arrivals lounges are excluded, as are spa and pre-flight dining facilities. [3]
  • Operator discretion. A lounge operator may refuse entry for statutory, regulatory or airport policy reasons, including health and safety and fire regulations, and may refuse entry or remove anyone whose dress or behaviour it considers unsuitable. [3] oneworld's lounge conditions also prohibit taking food or drink out of the lounge and apply a no-smoking policy. [3]
  • Peak periods in Sydney. Qantas says guests may be reaccommodated in an alternative lounge at busy times while the Sydney International Business Lounge operates from its temporary space. [2] [4]
