How does elite qualification work in MileagePlus?

United publishes four Premier levels for the 2026 qualification year, and the qualification window is 1 January to 31 December 2026. [7] Each tier can be reached either with a combination of PQF and PQP or with PQP alone. [7]

United's terms add a floor under those numbers: at least four paid flight segments on United or United Express. [7] Status earned in 2026 is valid through 31 January 2028. [7] Basic Economy and base fares earn PQP but not PQF, so a year built on the cheapest cabins can move the points total without moving the flight count. [7] The structure itself dates back further: since 1 January 2020, Premier status has been earned through PQP and PQF rather than through Premier qualifying miles, segments or dollars. [5] United reserves the right to change qualification criteria and mileage levels at any time, with or without notice, even where a change affects the value of status already held. [5]

On the Alaska side, United's status-match table names Alaska-Hawaiian Atmos Rewards as a participating airline programme and lists four elite levels: Atmos Silver, Atmos Gold, Atmos Platinum and Atmos Titanium. [6] Those four labels are the reference point United uses when deciding which Premier tier an applicant is matched to. [6] Applicants who already hold equivalent or higher status in MileagePlus will not be given matched status. [6]

How does the Premier Status Match Challenge treat Atmos Rewards status?

The 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge accepts applications from 8 January to 21 December 2026, and United says it will confirm whether a request is approved within 14 business days. [6] The offer is closed to members who took part in a MileagePlus Status Match within the previous three years or received a Premier Status Exception within the previous five. [6] The status held at the other airline must have been earned against published criteria or through a lifetime status award; trial, temporary and promotional status does not qualify. [6]

Approval alone does not produce status. The member must complete an activating flight operated by United or United Express within 90 days of approval, or, if flagged at application, a United-operated flight already taken in the previous 30 days. [6] Complimentary Premier status then runs for 120 days from that flight, which United calls the Challenge Period, and becomes effective five to seven business days after the activating flight posts. [6]

Keeping the matched tier requires both PQF and PQP earned on flights operated by United or United Express, or PQP from purchases on an eligible United Chase card held by the primary cardmember, all inside the Challenge Period. [6] The offer does not apply to United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers. [6] PQP from Economy Plus seating, preferred seat purchases, MileagePlus Upgrade Award co-pays and paid upgrades counts toward the challenge. [6] Meeting the Platinum requirements through the offer adds 20 PlusPoints, and meeting the 1K requirements adds 100 PlusPoints, credited within seven to ten business days. [6] The offer cannot be used to jump above the tier matched, though published qualification thresholds remain available. [6] Status earned in 2026 through the offer is valid through January 2028, or through January 2029 where it is earned on or after 1 January 2027. [6]

Which upgrade and companion benefits do the rules describe?

MileagePlus uses PlusPoints alongside miles and certificates as a balance in the account. [5] Like miles and certificates, PlusPoints cannot be sold, bartered or otherwise transferred outside what United authorises. [5] Premier-linked benefits, including bonus miles, Premier Access, baggage allowance and upgrade benefits, are set by the member's status at the time of travel rather than at the time the ticket was bought. [5] Some fares and tickets are excluded from upgrades altogether, including special promotional accommodations, rentals, industry discounts, consolidation tickets, group rates and PassPlus. [5] Class-of-service bonus miles follow the fare paid rather than the cabin flown, and are not credited on any upgrade. [5]

Companion benefits hang on the member's own travel. The MileagePlus number must stay on the reservation through the whole journey, and if a companion received benefits through the member's status but the member is no longer travelling on the original reservation, the companion loses those benefits. [5] During a status-match Challenge Period, no Premier membership materials are issued, and members may not have access to all reciprocal Premier benefits with United's partners, including Star Alliance lounge access. [6]

How do partner awards work under the MileagePlus rules?

MileagePlus defines partners broadly as airlines, banks, rental car companies, hotels or other entities that offer products, services or benefits to members. [5] Miles earned on a partner flight can generally be credited to only one frequent flyer or loyalty programme, and United decides which partner airlines are eligible and may change that list. [5] Partner offers are governed by the partner's own terms, and routing and destinations for award travel on airline partners are set by each travel partner rather than by United. [5] United may also block accrual or redemption on particular partner routes where the law requires it. [5]

Once a partner award ticket is issued, it carries the operating carrier's taxes, fees, tariffs, contract of carriage and re-accommodation policies. [5] Awards are valid only to destinations served both when the ticket is issued and at departure, and award amounts and availability can be changed or withdrawn. [5] Missing miles must be claimed within 12 months of the date they were earned, although individual partners may set different retro-credit windows. Limits and exceptions

• How MileagePlus balances end. Miles stay in the account until redeemed or forfeited under the programme rules, the contract of carriage or fare rules, prohibited conduct, applicable law, a member-requested account closure, the death of the member, or a failure to respond to repeated communications about the account. [5]
• No property rights. Miles, certificates, PlusPoints, Premier qualifying credits, status and awards are not the member's property; accrued miles can be moved to another MileagePlus account only through the Transfer Miles Program and its own terms. [5]
• Which flights count. PQF and the four-segment minimum require flights operated by United or United Express, and the status-match offer excludes United-marketed codeshares flown by other carriers. [7] [6]
• Companion dependency. Benefits passed to a companion through the member's status end if the member stops travelling on the original reservation. [5]
• Award ticket reach. An award is valid only to destinations served at both issuance and departure, and schedule changes that cut service are not United's or its partners' liability. [5]
