Virgin Australia Lounge: United Premier access and Velocity status

Virgin Australia Lounge refers to lounges operated by Virgin Australia, an Australian airline with hubs in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney that flies across Australia and to other countries in the region. [4]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • MileagePlus Premier Gold status or higher includes access to Virgin Australia operated lounges. [4]
  • Virgin Australia's own frequent flyer programme is Velocity, whose status tiers are Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus. [3]

The partner access route

United's MileagePlus partner page for Virgin Australia lists three extra benefits for members with Premier Gold status or higher: priority check-in, boarding and security clearance where available; one additional free checked bag; and access to Virgin Australia operated lounges. [4] The page is written from the MileagePlus side; it states the qualifying condition as Premier Gold status or higher with United. [4]

The benefit as worded covers lounges operated by Virgin Australia, on a page that also describes the airline's network: hubs in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, and flights across Australia and to other countries in the region. [4] For a general way to work through eligibility before a trip, see the lounge access checklist.

Where Velocity status sits

Velocity is Virgin Australia's own frequent flyer programme, and its structure is published on the airline's earn pages. [3] Velocity members earn Base Points on eligible Virgin Australia flights, and members holding status earn Tier Bonus Points on top of that: 50% of the Base Points amount for Silver, 75% for Gold, and 100% for Platinum and Platinum Plus. [3] For bookings made on or after 2 April 2025, the tier bonus applies on eligible domestic and short-haul international flights to all fare types except Lite. [3]

Status Credits behave on their own clock. They are valid for 12 months from the date flown, and a member's balance is calculated daily on the previous 365 days. [3] From 1 October 2025, eligible sectors are no longer required to upgrade or maintain status. [3] Upgrades into Silver, Gold and Platinum are assessed on the required number of Status Credits in the member's Status Credit balance earned during the previous 365 days. Maintenance of Silver, Gold and Platinum is assessed on the required number of Status Credits in the member's Status Credit balance earned during the member's Benefit Period. In both cases, at least 50% of the Status Credits in the balance must be earned on Virgin Australia marketed and/or Virgin Australia operated flights flown by the member. [3] Status Credits earned through partner airline marketed and operated flights, family pooling as a beneficiary, Flybuys, eligible Velocity credit cards or other partners do not count toward that minimum. [3]

For bookings made on or after 2 April 2025, Status Credit earn on eligible domestic and short-haul international flights is a fixed rate based on the all-inclusive fare: one Status Credit per $12 spent on Choice, Flex, Business and Groups, and one per $24 on Lite. [3] Virgin Australia flights between Australia and Doha carrying flight numbers VA1 to VA29 are operated by Qatar Airways for Virgin Australia. [3] The Velocity page checked sets out earning and status mechanics of this kind; it does not publish lounge entry rules by tier, so no connection between a Velocity tier and lounge access is stated here. [3] The Velocity programme profile covers the programme in full.

Exceptions and limits

  • Tier threshold. The lounge benefit on Virgin Australia is stated for Premier Gold status or higher, so Premier Silver and general MileagePlus members are not covered by it. [4]
  • Baggage carve-out. The additional free checked bag listed with the same Premier benefits does not apply to travel on Virgin Australia Economy Lite fares; the lounge line itself is not given an equivalent fare exclusion in the source. [4]
  • Availability wording. Priority check-in, boarding and security clearance are qualified as applying "where available", while the lounge access line carries no such qualifier in the same list. [4]
  • Lounge locations and opening hours, entry for Business Class passengers, paid lounge membership and its price, guest allowances, single-visit or day passes, and any Velocity tier threshold for entry are all absent from the two pages used here. [3] [4] On the general distinction between holding a membership and buying one-off access, see lounge membership vs day pass and the term lounge membership.
  • Scope. International partner lounge access and lounges not operated by Virgin Australia are excluded from this page, and nothing here should be read as a rule for another airline's lounge network. [4]
