GUIDE
Asia Miles vs KrisFlyer for card earning
Asia Miles is the mileage currency of Cathay's membership programme, and KrisFlyer is the mileage currency of Singapore Airlines' rewards programme. KrisFlyer says reward points earned with its bank and retail partners can be converted to miles [2], and its terms describe credit or charge card points converting at the rate specified by each partner programme [8]. Cathay's Asia Miles page lists hotel point conversions with Dorsett Hotels' Your Rewards points and Marriott Bonvoy, and describes retail partners as places to earn miles when shopping [1].

Key takeaways
- KrisFlyer converts reward points from its bank and retail partners into miles, with the conversion rate set by each partner programme [2] [8]; Cathay's Asia Miles page lists hotel point conversions with Dorsett Hotels and Marriott Bonvoy [1].
- Card points converted to KrisFlyer miles must land in the account of the principal cardholder who earned them; using another member's card points is prohibited. [5] [8]
- Cathay states Asia Miles never expire while the member keeps earning miles regularly, which makes activity rather than a fixed clock the deciding factor. [1]
- KrisFlyer awards are split between fixed-chart Saver and Advantage awards and availability-priced Access redemption. [5]
How card spending reaches each currency
KrisFlyer describes itself as a programme where members earn miles when they fly, shop, dine, book a hotel or rent a car, and where reward points earned with bank and retail partners can be converted into miles. [2] The KrisFlyer terms set out the mechanics: members collect credit or charge card points on participating cards based on the value of valid, eligible purchases, then convert those points to KrisFlyer miles at the conversion rate specified by the individual partner programme. [8] On co-branded credit and debit cards, the miles are deposited into the member's KrisFlyer account automatically each month. [8]
Two identity rules sit behind that flexibility. If you are the principal cardholder, the points you convert can only be credited to your own KrisFlyer or PPS Club account. [5] Crediting miles from credit or charge points that do not belong to that member is strictly prohibited, and Singapore Airlines reserves the right to cancel an account and all the miles in it where the rule is breached. [8]
Cathay presents Asia Miles as a currency built from everyday activity across flights, hotels, shopping, dining and wellness, with more than 800 travel and lifestyle partners named on its programme page. [1] Two partner mechanics appear on that page: Dorsett Hotels converts its Your Rewards points to Asia Miles at 1 Point = 10, and Marriott Bonvoy runs a two-way conversion with Asia Miles. [1] Cardholders of the Cathay World Elite Mastercard receive a 10% discount on the miles needed for a hotel-stay redemption on Cathay Holidays. [1]
Ratios, minimum blocks and fees
Neither programme page checked here publishes a bank-by-bank transfer ratio, a minimum transfer block or a card-transfer fee, so this guide does not reproduce a ratio table; the KrisFlyer terms place the conversion rate with the individual card partner, and Cathay's page highlights partner offers rather than a rate card. [1] [2] [8] The figures that are published are the programmes' own prices and conversion limits.
KrisFlyer members who hold at least half the miles needed for an award flight or upgrade can buy the remainder at US$0.04 per mile, and the amount paid is not refundable. [5] Cathay lists a top-up option for purchasing Asia Miles and a separate gifting option. [1]
Converting KrisFlyer miles out to other loyalty programmes carries stated minimums and annual caps: 5,000 miles minimum for Virgin Australia Velocity points, 20,000 miles minimum and a 180,000-mile calendar-year cap for Shangri-La Circle points, 1,000 miles minimum and a 200,000-mile annual cap for Fliggy points, and 3,000 miles minimum with an 80,000-mile annual cap for ONESIAM Coin. [5] None of those conversions can be reversed. [5] [8] They govern miles leaving KrisFlyer, not card points arriving, and the two directions follow different rules. [5]
Miles held by a minor can move without charge in one direction: a Cathay member can transfer miles from a minor in their redemption group into their own account, free of transfer and service fees. [1] KrisFlyer runs the other way — pooling is not permitted and transfers between members are not allowed, except that miles in a minor's account can go to the linked parent or guardian once the linking requirements are met and the relevant service fees paid. [5] [8]
Expiry and account activity
Cathay's position is that a member's Asia Miles will never expire as long as the member is earning miles regularly. [1]
Inactivity is handled separately from expiry — an account with no recorded activity for 45 consecutive months or more from the last recorded activity may be closed without notice, and so may an account with no recorded activity for 24 months or more from the date membership began, where recorded activity means transactions in which the member earns KrisFlyer miles. [8]
How each currency is used
Asia Miles are redeemed for flights on Cathay and partner airlines, with Miles Plus Cash available for Cathay or HK Express airfare; the same balance covers Cathay Holidays hotels, Cathay Shop products and experiences, and charity donations. [1]
KrisFlyer miles cover award tickets, upgrade awards and redemption tickets on Singapore Airlines, Star Alliance and other partner airlines, part or all of Singapore Airlines airfares, taxes and selected ancillaries on singaporeair.com, Economy awards on selected Scoot flights, and redemptions on KrisShop and KrisFlyer vRooms. [8] On Singapore Airlines, Saver and Advantage awards are priced from a fixed award chart, while Access redemption is priced on seat availability at the time of booking, is confirmed immediately without a waitlist, and draws on seats over and above those released as awards; Access applies only to flights operated by Singapore Airlines, not to Scoot or to codeshare flights operated by other airlines. [5]
Award tickets earn no KrisFlyer miles, Elite miles or PPS Value. [5] Cancellation of a Saver award costs USD 75 and of an Advantage or Access booking USD 50, while a date change on a Saver award on Singapore Airlines flights costs USD 25. [5] Each member may nominate up to five individuals, not a corporation, as redemption nominees, cannot change a nominee for six months, and pays a tier-dependent deletion fee that is free at Elite Gold and above and 3,000 KrisFlyer miles or US$30 online for a basic member. [5]
Exceptions and limits
- KrisFlyer status is not a card benefit: the type of credit, charge or debit card held has no bearing on the member's status and does not entitle the member to lounge access or Star Alliance or Singapore Airlines benefits. [8]
- Non-flight Elite miles from Kris+, KrisShop and Pelago spending count towards Elite Silver and Elite Gold only up to 5,000 and 10,000 miles respectively within a rolling 12-month period, and the tier thresholds are 25,000 Elite miles in 12 consecutive months for Elite Silver and 50,000 for Elite Gold. [6] [8]
- Newly enrolled KrisFlyer members need a minimum mileage balance before they can search for redemption flights, and Singapore Airlines does not disclose the figure. [5]
- Redemption bookings are not available for flights departing within 72 hours of a redemption nominee being added or replaced. [5]
- This page compares card earning, transfer routes and basic award use only; it does not reproduce either award chart, price any route, or conclude that one currency is better for every reader. [1] [5] [8]
