Booking-platform rewards vs airline miles: how to choose
Booking-platform rewards and airline miles are two separate balances rather than one currency: airline miles sit in a frequent flyer programme, are earned on eligible flights and are spent on award flights [8], while a booking site's reward currency sits inside that site's own membership scheme and follows its own rules. On the airline side the earning rates are published and depend on where the ticket was bought, which carrier operated the flight and which fare class was booked [8] [9] [10].

Key takeaways
- Airline miles are earned on eligible flights and spent on award flights; United MileagePlus members add their programme number to the reservation and make sure it is on the boarding pass at check-in. [8]
- With United, the purchase channel changes the calculation: tickets bought directly from United earn by fare price, status and card status, while tickets bought from another airline, a third-party website or a travel agency earn by flight distance and fare class. [8] [9]
- The operating carrier decides whether a flight earns at all: AJet-operated flights earn no MileagePlus miles and cannot be redeemed, and SWISS flight numbers LX 8000 to 8499 are operated by Edelweiss Air and earn at the Edelweiss Air accrual table. [8] [9]
- Spending is a separate step: award flights are booked online or through reservations, award tickets cannot be issued at the airport, and service charges may apply. [8] [9]
What is the difference between booking-platform rewards and airline miles?
The airline half of the comparison is a programme account. United MileagePlus members earn award miles and Premier qualifying credits (PQP and PQF) on eligible flights, credited to the account whose number is on the reservation and on the boarding pass. [8]
Because the two balances sit in separate accounts, a flight bought on a booking site is still a flight for airline-mile purposes. On United's partner pages, tickets bought from another airline, a third-party website or a travel agency earn miles based on the flight operator, the flight distance and the fare class of the ticket. [8] [9] [10]
Fare price drives the rate only on the direct channel: for tickets issued on or after 2 April 2026, a general MileagePlus member buying from United earns 3 miles per dollar, and the rate rises with status and with holding an eligible United card. [8] [9]
| MileagePlus status | Award miles per dollar | With an eligible United card |
|---|---|---|
| General member | 3 | 6 |
| Premier Silver | 5 | 8 |
| Premier Gold | 6 | 9 |
| Premier Platinum | 7 | 10 |
| Premier 1K | 9 | 12 |
The cardmember rates apply to the United MileagePlus Debit Rewards Card and the United Gateway Card only after $10,000 of spending on that card within a calendar year, and tickets issued before 2 April 2026 earned at 5, 7, 8, 9 and 11 miles per dollar by status. [8]
A booking platform's own currency is a different account with different ownership: the balance, its earning rules and what it can be spent on are set by that programme, and the programme pages for Agoda Rewards, One Key, Priceline VIP and Trip.com membership are the reference for those terms.
How do you earn airline miles when you book through a third-party site?
On United's partner earning pages, a ticket bought from another airline, a third-party website or a travel agency earns miles according to the operating carrier, the flight distance and the fare class of the ticket. [8] Flight distance means the miles scheduled for that specific flight, as determined by United. [8]
For Turkish Airlines-operated flights the scale runs from 125% of flight distance in Business down to 50% in deep discount Economy, and nine fare classes earn nothing. [8]
| Type of ticket | Fare classes | Award miles earned (including bonus) |
|---|---|---|
| Business | C, D, Z, K | 125% |
| Discount Business | J | 100% |
| Full-fare Economy | Y, B, M, A | 100% |
| Economy | H, S, O | 100% |
| Discount Economy | E, Q | 75% |
| Deep discount Economy | T, L, V | 50% |
| No mileage credit | F, G, I, N, P, R, U, W, X | No miles earned |
Other partners use their own percentages: on Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) flights, First and Business earn 200% of distance and the deepest discount Economy class K earns 25% [9], while on South African Airways flights Business earns 125% and the lowest listed discount Economy classes earn 50%. [10]
Codeshare flights are credited according to the operating carrier and its equivalent fare class, which can differ from the booking class that was sold. [8]
How do you redeem airline miles for flights?
Miles on Turkish Airlines, SWISS and South African Airways can be used to book regular award flights online or by calling the reservations line, and service charges may apply depending on the type of ticket, the travel dates and the member's MileagePlus status. [8] [9] [10] Members can also upgrade with Star Alliance Upgrade Awards. [8] Award tickets cannot be issued at the airport. [8] [9]
American Airlines AAdvantage members have a second route: as cash and miles rolls out, eligible members booking on aa.com or in the American app select flights priced in cash, choose whether to add trip insurance, then use a slider to set the cash-and-miles combination before the cost summary updates and payment is entered. [7]
Programme currency also buys non-flight choices at set thresholds: at 15,000 Loyalty Points an AAdvantage member can pick two inflight food and beverage coupons, and at 175,000, 250,000, 400,000, 550,000 or 750,000 Loyalty Points a 12-month New York Times All Access subscription. [7]
How do hotel bookings and mixed trips change the picture?
The rates above are flight rates: they apply to tickets and fare classes on flights operated by United's partner carriers. [8] [9] [10]
On a mixed trip, the flight half still earns under the flight rules, so a ticket bought from a third-party website or travel agency earns MileagePlus miles by distance and fare class when a partner carrier operates the flight. [8] The hotel half is a separate booking, and the balance it earns, together with what that balance can later be spent on, is set by the booking platform's own programme, such as Agoda Rewards, One Key, Priceline VIP or Trip.com membership. - Fare classes S and T on Turkish Airlines-operated flights are eligible only on United-marketed, Turkish-operated flights within Turkey. [8]
