How to check domestic lounge access rules
Domestic lounge access rules are the conditions a frequent flyer programme publishes for entering an airport lounge before a domestic flight, and they are applied to the traveller, the lounge and the flight itself rather than to a single domestic-or-international label: Qantas, for example, bases access on class of travel, Qantas Frequent Flyer membership tier, or Qantas Club, oneworld or Emirates membership status, and its alliance route requires departing on a flight that is both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. Key takeaways
- Lounge eligibility is tested against three things at once: the cabin you fly, your programme tier or club membership, and the flight you are departing on. [5]
- Qantas's alliance route requires a flight that is both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline, and the cabin route excludes oneworld connect partners. [5]
- Not every way in depends on status: Qantas lists Complimentary Lounge Invitations, single-visit Qantas Lounge Passes where available, and paid Qantas Club membership. [5]
- Qantas lounges follow Qantas lounge entry terms and conditions, while non-Qantas branded lounges follow the operator's own eligibility and entry requirements. [5]
Why does the flight matter as much as the status?
Qantas sets out lounge access as a set of separate tests rather than a single entitlement. The airline says access is based on the class of travel, the traveller's Qantas Frequent Flyer membership tier, or Qantas Club, oneworld or Emirates membership status. [5] Because those are distinct tests, holding status on its own does not settle the question: the flight being boarded has its own condition attached. [5]
The alliance route shows the pattern most clearly. Qantas Platinum Frequent Flyer and Gold Frequent Flyer members, equivalent to oneworld Emerald and Sapphire, can use more than 650 airport lounges worldwide, as can travellers flying in a First or Business Class cabin on any oneworld member airline, excluding oneworld connect partners. [5] To be eligible, the traveller must be departing on a flight that is both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. [5] That condition is written around the flight, so a departure that fails it does not open the alliance lounge route, however strong the traveller's tier or cabin. [5]
Which lounges exist at the airport also shapes the answer. Qantas lists Qantas Club lounges, a set of regional lounges, and separate First and Business lounges across its network, and the Sydney Qantas Club and Hobart Qantas Club appear alongside international Business lounges such as the one in Sydney. [5] Free Wi-Fi is available in all Qantas lounges. [5]
Which routes into a Qantas lounge are published?
Qantas publishes several different ways into its lounges, and each carries its own conditions. [5]
| Basis for access | What Qantas publishes |
|---|---|
| Class of travel | Access is based on class of travel, and a First or Business Class cabin on any oneworld member airline qualifies for alliance lounge access, excluding oneworld connect partners. [5] |
| Qantas Frequent Flyer tier | Platinum and Gold members, equivalent to oneworld Emerald and Sapphire, can access more than 650 airport lounges worldwide when departing on a flight marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. [5] |
| Membership status | Qantas Club, oneworld or Emirates membership status is published as a basis for access; Qantas Club is sold as a yearly or pay-as-you-go membership. [5] |
| Complimentary Lounge Invitation | Listed by Qantas as one of the ways to use a lounge. [5] |
| Single-visit Qantas Lounge Pass | Single-visit access to some of the lounges in Australia and around the world, if a pass is available. [5] |
What does "marketed and operated" mean for lounge eligibility?
Qantas states the alliance condition in terms of the flight: it must be both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. [5] Both halves therefore have to sit inside the alliance, the flight as sold under a oneworld member airline's flight number and the aircraft as flown by a oneworld member airline. [5] A traveller whose booking fails either half of that test does not meet the published eligibility requirement for the alliance route. [5]
The cabin route carries its own carve-out, since the published rule excludes oneworld connect partners from the First and Business Class basis for access. [5] Qantas also separates its own premises from other operators' premises: entry to Qantas lounges is subject to Qantas lounge entry terms and conditions, while entry to non-Qantas branded lounges is subject to the operator's eligibility and entry requirements. [5]
What are the exceptions and limits?
- Operator rules win in partner lounges. Where the lounge is not Qantas branded, the operator's own eligibility and entry requirements apply instead of Qantas's. [5]
- Passes reach some lounges, not all. Qantas describes Qantas Lounge Passes as single-visit access to some of the lounges in Australia and around the world, offered if a pass is available. [5]
- Dress code. The dress code is smart casual, which includes appropriate footwear. [5]
- Temporary moves and closures. The Sydney International Business Lounge has moved to a temporary space near gate 24 while a new lounge is built for completion in early 2027, and travellers may be reaccommodated in an alternative lounge during peak periods. [5] The Hobart Qantas Club is temporarily closed during the Hobart Airport terminal redevelopment, with light refreshments available near gates 8 and 9. [5]
- Refurbishment changes the room, not the rule. The regional lounge refresh was completed after the Emerald Regional Lounge reopened in August 2026, covering Coffs Harbour, Devonport, Emerald, Gladstone, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Mackay, Rockhampton and Tamworth; the Los Angeles Business Lounge refresh is complete and the Auckland International Lounge is open.
