How to get domestic lounge access with alliance elite status
Domestic lounge access with alliance elite status is the lounge entitlement a top-tier member of a global airline alliance holds when the whole journey stays inside one country, and it is narrower than the same benefit on an international trip. SkyTeam has offered SkyTeam Elite Plus members lounge access on domestic flights since 1 April 2025, at select SkyTeam member airline lounges. [3] Star Alliance ties Star Alliance Gold lounge access to a departure on a flight operated by a Star Alliance member airline, in any class of travel. [5]

Key takeaways
- Domestic access is settled in two steps: the alliance rule for your tier, and the lounge you are actually walking into. SkyTeam says lounge access may vary by airline and points members to its lounge finder for details. [3]
- SkyTeam Elite Plus members may use select lounges when they fly a domestic-only itinerary, and SkyTeam lists more than 70 member airline lounges open to Elite Plus travellers on domestic itineraries as of 18 October 2026. [3]
- Star Alliance Gold access is written around the flight taken: any class of travel, but departing on a flight operated by a Star Alliance member airline, while Star Alliance Silver members have no lounge access. [5]
- Arrival lounges sit outside both published benefits: arrival access is not a Star Alliance benefit, and SkyTeam provides access at departure and transfer airports only. [5] [3]
How does Star Alliance Gold lounge access work?
Star Alliance Gold customers have access to Star Alliance lounges when travelling on a Star Alliance flight in any class of travel, while Star Alliance Silver customers do not have access to Star Alliance lounges. [5] The condition sits on the departure flight: you must always be departing on a flight operated by a Star Alliance member airline to use a Star Alliance or Star Alliance member airline lounge at the departure airport. [5]
The practical tool is the alliance's lounge finder, which lists departure lounges only and can be filtered by departure airport, the airline you are flying with, cabin class, frequent flyer programme and programme status. [5]
Connecting itineraries. Where a reservation connects directly between a Star Alliance member airline flight and a flight operated by a Connecting Partner, a Gold member has access to Star Alliance member owned lounges, Star Alliance branded lounges, Connecting Partner lounges and lounges contracted by the Connecting Partner. [5] Connecting Partner lounges are not included in the alliance's lounge finder. [5]
Arrivals and guests. Arrival lounge access is not a Star Alliance benefit, and for arrival lounges the alliance directs members to the airline operating the flight. [5] Star Alliance Gold customers are entitled to one guest, who must enter the designated lounge with the eligible customer and show a boarding pass for a Star Alliance flight departing from the local airport. [5]
How does SkyTeam Elite Plus work on a domestic itinerary?
Regardless of travel class, eligible SkyTeam Elite Plus members have lounge access when travelling on a same-day international flight operated by a SkyTeam member airline, or with same-day transfers between flights — domestic or international — operated by two SkyTeam members. [3] Access is given at departure and transfer airports only, not on arrival, and Elite Plus members can enjoy the lounge from at least three hours before their flight's scheduled departure time. [3]
A domestic flight fits that international rule only as part of a longer journey: customers travelling on domestic flights must have an itinerary comprising a transfer from a domestic flight to an international flight, or a domestic flight to another domestic flight followed by a transfer to an international flight. [3]
Domestic-only trips. SkyTeam adds that customers travelling on a domestic-only itinerary may have access to select lounges. [3] Since 1 April 2025, SkyTeam Elite Plus customers have had lounge access when travelling on domestic flights, and the benefit is currently available at select SkyTeam member airline lounges. [3] As of 18 October 2026 SkyTeam counts more than 70 lounges as accessible to Elite Plus travellers on domestic itineraries, and says it and its members plan to extend domestic lounge access gradually to more locations. [3]
| Domestic-only itinerary | Select SkyTeam member airline lounges; benefit in place since 1 April 2025; more than 70 lounges as of 18 October 2026 [3] |
|---|---|
| Domestic leg of a longer trip | Covered where the itinerary transfers from domestic to international, or domestic to domestic and then to international [3] |
| Where access applies | Departure and transfer airports, not arrival [3] |
| Timing | From at least three hours before the scheduled departure time [3] |
| Guest | One guest, travelling on the same SkyTeam member-operated flight [3] |
Present your boarding passes and a valid Elite Plus membership card to the lounge agent for validation before admission. [3] SkyTeam says it aims to offer lounge access to Elite Plus, First and Business Class customers without reservations being required. [3] An Elite Plus member can invite one guest, who must be travelling on the same SkyTeam member-operated flight, irrespective of their preceding and any onward flight. [3]
Do cabin class and elite status follow the same domestic rules?
For First and Business Class customers, SkyTeam requires all segments to be booked in First or Business and both the domestic and international flights to be operated by a SkyTeam member airline. [3] Those customers travelling on domestic flights must have an itinerary comprising a transfer from a domestic flight to an international flight, or a domestic flight to another domestic flight followed by a transfer to an international flight. [3]
The explicit domestic-only allowance is written for Elite Plus members, who may have access to select lounges on that kind of itinerary. [3] For cabin-based access, the published policy describes domestic flying as part of an itinerary that continues to an international flight. [3]
SkyTeam also notes that lounge access may vary by airline and directs customers to its lounge finder for more detail. [3]
Exceptions and limits
- Programme-specific domestic rules. Separate domestic lounge access policies may apply to members of Aerolineas Argentinas' Aerolineas Plus programme and Delta Air Lines' SkyMiles programme. [3]
- Delta Sky Clubs. Complimentary access at Delta Sky Clubs is no longer extended to Delta SkyMiles Elite Plus equivalent members — Diamond, Platinum and Gold Medallion — when flying in Main Cabin or Delta Comfort+ internationally. [3] Effective 1 January 2024, Delta SkyMiles members travelling in Basic Economy or an equivalent partner cabin do not have access to Delta Sky Clubs, and SkyTeam Elite Plus members of other SkyTeam member frequent flyer programmes are not affected. [3] Delta SkyTeam Elite Plus members flying on a Delta or other SkyTeam operated flight can continue to use other SkyTeam member airline owned lounges and SkyTeam branded lounges, while third-party lounges are excluded. [3]
- Caribbean travel. SkyTeam's international travel definition excludes customers travelling between the United States and the Caribbean. [3]
- Silver tier. Star Alliance Silver customers have no access to Star Alliance lounges, so the domestic question only arises from Gold upward. [5]
- Guest conditions. A Star Alliance guest needs a boarding pass for a Star Alliance flight departing from the same airport as the member. [5] A SkyTeam guest must be on the same SkyTeam member-operated flight as the Elite Plus member. [3]
Frequently asked questions
Does alliance elite status guarantee lounge access on a domestic flight?
Not everywhere. SkyTeam's domestic benefit is limited to select member airline lounges and the alliance says access may vary by airline [3], while Star Alliance sets Gold access around a departure on a Star Alliance member-operated flight and lists departure lounges in its finder. [5]
Which SkyTeam members face different domestic lounge rules?
Separate domestic lounge access policies may apply to members of Aerolineas Argentinas' Aerolineas Plus programme and Delta Air Lines' SkyMiles programme. [3]
Can an elite member take a guest into a domestic lounge?
Star Alliance Gold customers are entitled to one guest on a Star Alliance flight departing from the same airport [5], and SkyTeam Elite Plus members can invite one guest travelling on the same SkyTeam member-operated flight. [3]
Is lounge access on arrival included?
Arrival access is not a Star Alliance benefit, and the alliance directs members to the operating airline for arrival lounges [5]; SkyTeam provides access at departure and transfer airports only, not on arrival. [3]
How early can I enter the lounge before a SkyTeam departure?
Elite Plus members can enjoy access to the lounge at the departure airport at least three hours prior to their flight's scheduled departure time. [3]
