Issuer Travel Portals Compared: Amex Travel, Chase Travel, Citi Travel and Capital One Travel

Issuer travel portals are booking channels run by a card issuer rather than by an airline or hotel, where a cardholder can pay for travel with cash, with loyalty points, or with a mixture of both. [7] [2] This page compares the four US issuer portals named in its title, using each issuer's own published pages, and marks clearly where an issuer publishes nothing on a point a reader would expect — price guarantees, portal earning rates, and whether a portal booking earns airline or hotel status credit. Key takeaways

  • Chase's programme agreement defines Chase Travel as the websites, phone lines and service channels operated by, or available through, Chase and its affiliated travel companies, excluding independent travel advisors and agencies. [7]
  • The same agreement lets cardholders pay for Chase Travel bookings with points, with the card alone, or with points plus the card when the balance falls short. [7]
  • American Express documents Membership Rewards transfers to airline and hotel programmes, and states that transfers cannot be reversed. [5] [6]
  • No price guarantee appears on the Chase Travel page, the Citi card index or the Amex terms and transfer guidance checked for this comparison. [2] [4] [5] [6]

Chase Travel: cash, points or both

The Ultimate Rewards programme agreement for the Ink Business Preferred card defines "Chase Travel" as the websites, phone numbers and customer service channels operated by, or available through, Chase and its affiliated travel companies — not independent travel advisors and agencies or other third parties — through which cardholders may book travel under the programme, including chasetravel.com and chase.com/ultimaterewards. [7]

Under that agreement, points can be redeemed for available travel options through Chase Travel, most travel can be booked through the portal with no points at all by paying with the card, and a shortfall in points can be covered by charging the rest to the card. [7] Bookings are made at chasetravel.com or by calling the number on the back of the card. [7] Minimum point amounts may apply to some bookings, and additional terms, conditions and disclosures are provided before travel is booked and form part of the agreement. [7]

In the same agreement, points redeemed for cash, gift cards and travel are each worth one cent, so 100 points equal $1, while other reward options may be worth more or less and promotional offers may exceed that cash value. [7] That figure belongs to the Ink Business Preferred agreement; other Chase cards carry their own terms, and the agreement itself says redemption values for reward options vary. [7]

The consumer-facing site says bookings made through Chase Travel earn loyalty rewards on flights, cruises and stays with select hotel brands plus Ultimate Rewards points, subject to hotel, airline and cruise programme rules. [2] Points Boost offers, which make points worth more when booking through Chase Travel, are described as available for Sapphire and Freedom cardmembers. [2] Cruises booked through Voyages by Chase Travel are listed with extras: a shipboard credit worth up to $200 on Virgin Voyages, up to $100 per stateroom plus complimentary specialty dining for two on Royal Caribbean, and a $250 destination experience credit per person on Explora Journeys when an excursion is prebooked. [2] Local activities can be booked in more than 130 countries, and hotel reviews on the site come from visits by Chase Travel experts to hotels where eligible cardmembers receive premium benefits. [2]

Amex: transfers

To transfer, the Rewards Account must first be linked to the partner loyalty account, and the partner account must be held by the cardholder or by an Additional Card Member who was issued the card at least 90 days before the link was made. [5] [6] The name on the card and the name on the loyalty account must match for the link and the transfer to succeed. [6]

In most cases a transfer must be at least 1,000 points and in multiples of 1,000. [5] Transfers cannot be reversed, and once points reach the partner account the partner programme's terms govern them. [5] [6] Processing typically takes 48 hours, though some programmes post points later, so the partner balance should be confirmed before a booking is made. [5] [6]

One consequence reaches beyond transfers: a flight paid for with frequent flyer miles is not charged to the card, so the insurance and other benefits that apply when a flight is charged to the card do not apply. [5] The Amex customer service page checked also carries navigation entries for a booking portal and for card-specific hotel programmes, but its text publishes no earning rate, price guarantee, or change and cancellation policy for Amex Travel bookings. [6]

Citi and Capital One

The Citi page checked is the issuer's card index rather than a portal page. [4] It lists the Citi Strata Premier and Citi Strata Elite cards with an annual hotel benefit, and says the Strata Elite earns ThankYou Points on travel and dining purchases. [4] It also lists American Airlines co-branded cards that earn AAdvantage miles on purchases. [4] It publishes no earning rate for bookings made through Citi Travel, no price guarantee, and no change or cancellation rule. [4]

Status, price and what stays unpublished

Chase Travel states that hotel, airline and cruise programme rules apply to bookings made through it, while advertising loyalty rewards on flights, cruises and selected hotel-brand stays alongside Ultimate Rewards points. [2] That wording describes earning programme rewards on the flight or stay; it does not say whether a portal booking counts toward airline elite status, hotel elite-night credit or a frequent flyer balance, and the Citi page is equally silent on status credit for portal bookings. [2] [4]

On Chase, additional terms and disclosures are supplied before a travel booking is completed, and the Travel Disclosures linked at the foot of chasetravel.com form part of the programme agreement. [7]

The other split worth knowing is what the card itself earns. Citi's co-branded AAdvantage cards are listed as earning AAdvantage miles, while the Strata cards are listed as earning ThankYou Points, which sit on the transferable side of that divide. [4] If a booking must also protect hotel or airline benefits, the direct-booking trade-offs are set out in our hotel direct booking and loyalty guide, and the background on programme-specific miles versus transferable points is in co-branded cards vs transferable points. [4]

Exceptions and limits

  • Under the Chase agreement, once points have been used the transaction is final and may not be cancelled unless otherwise noted. [7]
  • A service fee may be charged for booking Chase Travel by phone, with the amount disclosed before the booking, and minimum point amounts may apply to some redemptions. [7]
  • Chase points do not expire while the account is open, but they are lost immediately if the account status changes or the account is closed for misuse, fraud or the other reasons listed in the agreement. [7] If an account is closed for any other reason, at least 30 days are allowed to use the points. [7]
  • Amex charges an excise tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point, capped at $99, on points transferred to a US airline frequent flyer programme. [5]
  • If an airline stops participating in Membership Rewards, Amex may limit transfers to that programme before its participation ends, but the limit will be at least 100,000 points. [5]
  • These rules are card- and market-specific: the Chase terms quoted come from the Ink Business Preferred agreement, and the Amex terms from the US Membership Rewards programme terms and US transfer guidance, so neither should be read across to another card or another issuer's portal. [5] [7]

Sources

Sources checked on 18 October 2026. Capital One Travel is not covered, because no Capital One page was among the sources checked, and Citi Travel is represented only by the issuer's card index; for American Express the pages checked cover Membership Rewards transfers rather than portal bookings, so no portal earning rate or price guarantee is stated for Amex Travel, Citi Travel or Capital One Travel here.
