How to plan Istanbul Airport lounge access

Istanbul Airport lounge access runs on two separate rulebooks: Turkish Airlines' Miles&Smiles programme sets the status tiers a member can hold, while Star Alliance sells paid lounge entry that does not depend on frequent flyer status or a business class seat. [6] [3] Knowing which rulebook you are using is the difference between buying your way in and qualifying through a programme.

Key takeaways

  • Star Alliance sells paid entry to more than 1,000 lounges worldwide, and buying it requires neither frequent flyer status nor a business class ticket. [3]
  • The purchase is tied to your flight: you must be travelling on a Star Alliance member carrier, and the booking admits you only to the lounge you reserved. [3]
  • A paid reservation covers a maximum three-hour stay unless the access document or the lounge itself indicates otherwise. [3]
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles uses four status tiers — Classic, Classic Plus, Elite and Elite Plus — set by Status Miles earned on Turkish Airlines and Star Alliance member airline flights. [6]

What do you need to get into a lounge you paid for?

Star Alliance's paid lounge product is sold separately from status. Its published answers state that there are no restrictions on buying lounge access based on tier status or class of travel, and that a traveller who purchased through the reservation website does not need frequent flyer status or a business class seat to be admitted. [3]

The condition attaches to the flight rather than the passenger: you have to be flying on a Star Alliance member carrier flight. [3] A reservation is valid only for the lounge you booked, not for any other lounge at the same airport. [3]

At the entrance you present the lounge reservation together with a valid boarding pass for the same day of travel, and you may be asked at any time to present an identification document. [3] You must be at least 18 years old to reserve lounge access, and identification may be requested at the door. [3]

A reservation can be made for another person provided their full name matches the boarding pass, and a travel party can include up to nine people including yourself. [3] Any guests added to a reservation are eligible for entry only in the presence of the person under whose name the booking was made. [3]

How does paid lounge entry work on the day?

Star Alliance says access is guaranteed once a reservation is completed, subject to the lounge's own policies, including dress code and conduct rules that must be followed. [3] You may enter on the date and time specified in the reservation; buying access at the lounge counter by scanning the barcode lets you proceed to entry straight away. [3]

The standard limit is a maximum three-hour stay in the lounge unless otherwise indicated on the access document or by the lounge. [3] Quoted lounge prices already include taxes and service fees. [3]

The date and time cannot be changed after booking: the first name, last name, email address, flight number and comments can be modified, but a different date or time means cancelling and booking again. [3] Some lounges restrict the times at which access can be purchased, in which case a different date or time has to be chosen. [3]

What happens if your flight is cancelled or delayed?

Refund treatment depends on why the trip failed and when you cancel. A reservation is fully refunded where it is cancelled more than 24 hours before the estimated time of entrance because the flight was cancelled or delayed by more than four hours. [3] If there is no cancellation, or the flight is not cancelled or delayed by more than four hours, the reservation is not refunded. [3] Partial refunds exclude a service fee of 5% of the total transaction. [3]

Cancellations are made through the "Manage my Reservation" link included in the reservation confirmation email, and Star Alliance notes that not all cancellations are eligible for a refund. [3]

How is Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles status structured?

Turkish Airlines' Miles&Smiles programme keeps redeemable Miles separate from Status Miles. Miles are earned on flights operated by Turkish Airlines or partner airlines, from spending on Miles&Smiles co-branded credit cards and through programme partners, and they are valid for three years. [6] They can be used for award tickets, cabin upgrades, Cash&Miles and Shop&Miles. [6]

Status Miles work differently. They are earned from flights operated by Turkish Airlines and Star Alliance member airlines, and they determine the member's programme status: Classic, Classic Plus, Elite or Elite Plus. [6] They cannot be redeemed or spent on any award. [6]

Exceptions and limits

  • Children. Child access is not uniform: Star Alliance says some lounges offer complimentary access for children while others require lounge access to be purchased for each child entering, so the individual lounge's policy decides. [3]
  • Lounge rules still apply. Star Alliance points out that lounges have their own terms and conditions for entry, including dress code and conduct, which must be followed. [3]
  • Guests travel with the booker. Guests appended to a reservation are admitted only in the presence of the person under whose name the reservation was made. [3]
  • Party size wording differs. One Star Alliance answer describes a travel party of up to nine people including yourself, while another describes a maximum of nine additional guests under the same reservation, so the party size should be confirmed when booking. [3]
  • Stay length. Three hours is a ceiling rather than a guarantee; some lounges sell multiple durations of stay at varying prices. [3]
  • Locations and hours. Star Alliance advises travellers to check the specific lounge's access policy and operating hours, because terminal placement, opening times and entry conditions are set lounge by lounge. [3]
  • Programme scope. The tier names and the three-year validity of Miles are Miles&Smiles rules, and Status Miles can only be earned on Turkish Airlines and Star Alliance member airline flights. [6]

Frequently asked questions

Do I need frequent flyer status or a business class ticket to buy Star Alliance lounge access?

No. Star Alliance states there are no restrictions on purchasing lounge access based on tier status or class of travel, and that a business class ticket or frequent flyer status is not needed once access has been bought through its reservation website. [3]

Can I use my reservation at a different lounge in the same airport?

No. You are eligible to enter only the lounge you made the reservation for. [3] The reservation also has to be shown with a valid boarding pass for the same day of travel. [3]

How many guests can one reservation cover?

Star Alliance describes a travel party of up to nine people including yourself, and separately describes a maximum of nine additional guests under the same reservation, so confirm the figure for the lounge you are booking. [3] Guests are admitted only in the presence of the person named on the reservation. [3]

How long can I stay inside the lounge?

A lounge reservation provides for a maximum three-hour stay unless otherwise indicated on the access document or by the lounge, and some lounges offer several durations at different prices. [3]

What are the Miles&Smiles status tiers?

Classic, Classic Plus, Elite and Elite Plus, decided by Status Miles earned from flights operated by Turkish Airlines and Star Alliance member airlines; Status Miles cannot be redeemed for awards. [6]
