How to make a Delta same-day change

Delta SkyMiles same-day change is one of the topics Delta's Baggage & Travel Fees page is described as covering: the link text for that page says it covers "all things related to baggage, travel services offered, same-day travel changes, and possible additional fees" [1]. The SkyMiles program rules separately list a same-day confirmed fee among the ancillary charges that do not count toward miles or Medallion Qualification Dollars [3].

Key takeaways

  • Delta's Baggage & Travel Fees link blurb says that page covers baggage, travel services offered, same-day travel changes and possible additional fees [1].
  • The SkyMiles program rules list a same-day confirmed fee among the ancillary charges that do not count toward miles or Medallion Qualification Dollars, as a separate item from ticket change and cancellation fees [3].
  • Seat purchases are on the earning side: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta First, Delta Comfort and Preferred Seat purchases and paid premium-class upgrades made through a Delta channel earn MQDs, subject to stated airport exceptions [2] [3].
  • Medallion Status is earned through Medallion Qualification Dollars, with 2026 thresholds running from $5,000 for Silver to $28,000 for Diamond, and waived fees including baggage fees are listed among the tier benefits [2].

Where Delta lists same-day changes

Delta's Baggage & Travel Fees page is described in its link text as covering "all things related to baggage, travel services offered, same-day travel changes, and possible additional fees" [1]. The SkyMiles program rules describe how the airline accounts for money paid alongside a ticket. They name a same-day confirmed fee and list it under "all other ancillary purchases or fees" that do not count toward earning miles or MQDs — a list that also covers checked baggage fees, Delta Sky Club memberships and Sky Club food and beverage purchases, in-flight Wi-Fi passes, in-flight food and beverage purchases, unaccompanied minor fees, pet travel fees, mileage purchases and mileage transfer fees, ticket change and cancellation fees, Direct Ticketing Charges, Administrative Service Charges and External Reissue Charges [3]. Seat purchases are treated differently: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta First, Delta Comfort and Preferred Seat purchases and paid premium-class upgrades made through a Delta channel are eligible to earn MQDs [2] [3], although such a purchase made at the airport in Amsterdam or Paris for a Delta-operated flight earns neither miles nor MQDs, and complimentary access to those seats earns nothing [2] [3].

What Delta publishes about same-day change fees

Delta's Baggage & Travel Fees link blurb lists same-day travel changes and possible additional fees among the topics that page covers [1]. In the program rules, a same-day confirmed fee appears in the ancillary list alongside ticket change and cancellation fees, Direct Ticketing Charges, Administrative Service Charges and External Reissue Charges, none of which count toward earning miles or MQDs [3]. SkyMiles benefits are conditioned on compliance with the program rules, the contract of carriage and Delta's fare rules, and unless otherwise stated the rules in effect at the time of travel or of the request govern that transaction [3]. The Delta SkyMiles fees guide covers the wider set of airline charges.

Two consequences follow from the program rules. First, a same-day confirmed fee does not count toward SkyMiles miles or MQDs, and neither do ticket change fees, cancellation fees, direct ticketing charges or external reissue charges [3]. Second, Delta eCredits are valid only for payment of tickets and government-imposed taxes and fees, and are not accepted for other types of fees such as checked baggage and change fees [3]. Where a change is made to an award ticket, any mileage difference, taxes and fees are payable by the passenger [3].

Basic Economy and award tickets

Delta Main Basic (Basic Economy) tickets are not eligible to earn miles in the SkyMiles Program or to earn credit toward Medallion Status [3], a rule the SkyMiles overview repeats when it says Delta Main Basic tickets do not earn miles [4]. Basic Economy is also excluded from Million Miler credit [6], and Delta's unlimited complimentary upgrades to Delta First and Delta Comfort exclude Delta Basic experiences [4].

Award tickets have their own rulebook. For travel originating in the United States and Canada to anywhere in the world, including flights operated by joint venture and codeshare partners, members may change the origin, destination, routing, date and time, or cancel, without a redeposit or change fee — except Delta Basic experience fares, where a change fee applies if changes are permitted at all; mileage difference, taxes and fees still apply to any change [3]. For some travel originating outside the United States and Canada, award ticket restrictions vary and tickets may be non-cancelable or changeable only for a fee [3].

Routing is part of the same picture. Delta limits award travel to two connections per origin and destination for domestic travel and three connections for international travel [3], and valid routings vary with the operating carriers of the award ticket, with exceptions or variations potentially requiring additional miles [3]. Award tickets can only be issued by Delta on Delta ticket stock [3].

Medallion status, fees and Status Match

SkyMiles Members earn Medallion Status through Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) [2]. The thresholds Delta publishes to earn toward 2026 Medallion Status are below [2].

Medallion Qualification Dollar thresholds for 2026 Medallion Status
TierMQDs required
Silver Medallion$5,000
Gold Medallion$10,000
Platinum Medallion$15,000
Diamond Medallion$28,000

Delta lists waived fees, including baggage fees, among the benefits of Medallion Status [2], and the Status Match page sets out a fuller list of Medallion benefits: unlimited complimentary upgrades for the member and a travel companion, waived baggage fees, priority boarding, preferred seats and, for Platinum Medallion, a Choice Benefit selection [5]. Members matched to Platinum Medallion Status are not eligible for Choice Benefits unless they meet the requirements to extend Platinum Medallion Status [5]. Delta publishes separate benefits pages for Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond Medallion [2]. The Delta SkyMiles elite status guide walks through qualification in more detail.

Status can also arrive from outside the programme, but the Status Match Challenge has several conditions. Delta's 2026 terms list all of the following eligibility criteria: the member has not enrolled in, matched to, or earned Medallion Status through the Status Match programme, promotional Medallion Status offers or complimentary Medallion Status at any time during 2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026, a restriction that does not apply to the Million Miler programme or select SkyMiles promotional campaigns; the member currently holds elite status with a qualifying airline earned through that airline's published requirements, with complimentary status and status earned through a promotion excluded; the member can present a valid, current elite physical or digital membership card or credential plus a statement showing the earned status and the activity behind it; the member has been enrolled in SkyMiles for at least 30 days before enrolling for Status Match; and, within the previous three years as a SkyMiles Member, the member has flown at least one Delta-marketed flight above Delta Main Basic, with the member's SkyMiles account number included on the reservation [5]. The offer is also not available to members who were previously enrolled at any time since 1 January 2023, or who are currently enrolled, in a Status Match Challenge, Reclaim My Status or a Corporate accelerated Medallion Status offer, and an accepted member may enrol only once every three years [5]. Approved members are matched to Platinum, Gold or Silver Medallion Status for 90 days, complimentary, with the period beginning within 24 hours of the enrollment confirmation email [5].

The complimentary status can be extended by earning MQDs during the three-month Match Period — $1,250 for Silver, $2,500 for Gold or $3,750 for Platinum [5]. A member may only extend the same or a lower Medallion Tier than the tier originally matched: someone matched to Gold cannot earn Platinum Medallion Status through the offer, though a member who falls short of the Gold requirement but meets the Silver requirement can extend at Silver [5]. MQDs earned during the Match Period count toward that target whether they come from Delta-marketed flights operated by Delta or a partner airline, from spend on an eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card, from MQD Boost, or from Delta Vacations packages; MQDs awarded through MQD Headstart do not count, even if the eligible card is acquired during the Match Period [5]. The extension also requires at least one Delta-marketed flight during the Match Period, excluding Delta Main Basic [5]. Annual complimentary status earned through Million Miler runs for the Medallion Year, currently 1 February to 31 January [6].

Exceptions and limits

  • Short-notice markets. Award tickets for travel within or originating in China, Russia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Brazil and any country in Africa require 72 hours' advance purchase, and members who want to travel within that window must buy the ticket at the airport, including any reissue, with no exceptions [3].
  • Partially used awards. Once travel has begun on an award ticket, the award counts as used and miles are not credited back for the unused portion [3].
  • Basic Economy. Delta Main Basic tickets earn no miles and no Medallion Qualification Dollars [3], earn no Million Miler credit [6], and Delta Basic experiences are excluded from complimentary upgrades [4].
  • Payment methods. Delta eCredits are valid only for ticket payment and government-imposed taxes and fees, and are not accepted for other types of fees such as checked baggage and change fees [3].
  • Seat purchases. Preferred Seats and paid premium-class upgrades bought through a Delta channel earn MQDs, but not when bought at the airport in Amsterdam or Paris for a Delta-operated flight, and no MQDs are awarded for complimentary access or after a voluntary change of seat or flight [2] [3].
  • Changing rules. Delta states that all SkyMiles benefits are conditioned on compliance with the program rules, the contract of carriage and fare rules, and that those terms are subject to change at any time [3].
