GUIDE
How to request a Delta SkyMiles status match
The Delta SkyMiles Medallion Status Match Challenge is Delta Air Lines' published route for elite members of other airlines to move their loyalty across: a qualifying applicant receives complimentary Silver, Gold or Platinum Medallion status for 90 days, and can keep status for a full term by earning a set amount of Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) inside that window [2]. The rules below are Delta's public Status Match Challenge terms, last updated by Delta on 1 January 2026 and covering the 2026 enrolment year [2].
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Eligible elite members of other airlines get complimentary Silver, Gold or Platinum Medallion status for 90 days; Diamond Medallion is not part of the match [2].
- Keeping status beyond 90 days needs $1,250 MQDs for Silver, $2,500 MQDs for Gold or $3,750 MQDs for Platinum, earned during the Match Period, plus at least one Delta-marketed flight in that period [2].
- The other airline's status must have been earned through its published requirements, and the applicant must not have held matched, promotional or complimentary Delta Medallion status at any point in 2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026 [2].
- Members who enrol between 1 January and 31 December 2026 and complete the challenge are given status through 31 January 2028 [2].
Who can apply for a Delta SkyMiles status match?
Delta sets four conditions, and an applicant has to meet all of them [2].
- No recent Delta Medallion history through other channels. The applicant must not have enrolled in, matched or earned Medallion status through the Status Match programme, promotional Medallion offers or complimentary Medallion status at any time during 2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026; that restriction does not apply to the Million Miler programme or to select SkyMiles promotional campaigns [2].
- Current elite status, properly earned. The applicant must hold elite status with a qualifying airline that was earned through that airline's published requirements, so complimentary status or status obtained through a promotion does not qualify [2].
- Evidence of both the tier and the activity. Two items are required: a valid, current elite membership card or credential in the applicant's name, and a statement showing the earned elite status together with the activity that produced it, also in the applicant's name; photos, app screenshots or other file formats are accepted as long as the tier and name are clearly visible [2].
- An established SkyMiles account with recent Delta flying. The applicant must have been enrolled in SkyMiles for at least 30 days before applying, and must have flown at least one Delta-marketed flight on a fare class higher than Delta Main Basic within the previous three years as a member [2].
Requests can take up to 15 business days to review, and the 90-day complimentary period starts within 24 hours of the enrolment confirmation email, so Delta advises applicants to be ready to begin the challenge before they submit [2]. Applicants who are not approved receive an email with Delta's decision [2].
Which competitor elite tiers map to Silver, Gold or Platinum Medallion?
Delta matches an approved applicant to Platinum, Gold or Silver Medallion according to their current elite status with another airline [2]. No match to Diamond Medallion is offered, so holding the top status at another airline does not produce a Diamond match [2].
| Airline programme | Silver Medallion | Gold Medallion | Platinum Medallion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air Canada Aeroplan | 25K and 35K | 50K | 75K and Super Elite |
| Air New Zealand Airpoints | Airpoints Silver | Airpoints Gold | Airpoints Elite |

| American Airlines AAdvantage | Gold | Platinum | Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro, Concierge Key |
| Asiana Airlines Asiana Club | Gold | Diamond | Diamond Plus, Platinum |
| British Airways Executive Club | Bronze | Silver | Gold |
| Copa Airlines ConnectMiles | Silver | Gold | Platinum, Presidential Platinum |

Airlines that do not appear on the chart are not automatically excluded: an applicant whose status sits with an airline other than a Delta airline partner can still submit a request if they meet the participation criteria [2].
What does the Status Match Challenge require to extend status?
Two things must happen inside the Match Period: the required amount of MQDs must be earned, and the member must take at least one Delta-marketed flight, excluding Delta Main Basic [2]. The Match Period is the 90 days running from the time the account is upgraded, and MQDs earned before enrolment or after the period do not count [2]. MQDs themselves are measured in US dollars [3].
| Matched tier | MQDs needed to extend |
|---|---|
| Silver Medallion | $1,250 |
| Gold Medallion | $2,500 |
| Platinum Medallion | $3,750 |
Qualifying flights during the Match Period on Delta, Delta Connection and SkyMiles partner airlines count toward the target, and so do MQDs earned from other sources during the period, including Delta SkyMiles American Express Cards [2]. One exception is MQD Headstart: MQDs awarded that way do not apply to the challenge, even if the eligible card is acquired during the Match Period [2]. Delta Main Basic (Basic Economy) tickets earn no miles or MQD credit toward Medallion status in the SkyMiles programme at all, which is why the challenge leaves them out [3].
A member can only extend the same tier they were matched to, or a lower one: someone matched to Gold cannot reach Platinum through the offer, but someone who falls short of the Gold target and meets the Silver target can take extended Silver status instead [2]. Choice Benefits work differently for matched members — a member matched to Platinum is not eligible for them unless the requirements to extend Platinum status are met, and matched members have no Choice Benefit access during the Match Period unless they earn Platinum or Diamond Medallion through Delta's published requirements [2].
How is matched Medallion status dated?
The complimentary period lasts 90 days, beginning within 24 hours after the enrolment confirmation email rather than on the day of application [2]. Matched status expires after those 90 days unless that level, or a higher level of Medallion status, is awarded before the expiry date [2].
For the 2026 enrolment year the extension carries further: members who enrol between 1 January and 31 December 2026 and complete the challenge are awarded status through 31 January 2028, the end of the 2027 Medallion Year, regardless of when in the year they enrol or qualify [2]. Delta's Medallion Year runs from 1 February to 31 January [5]. Where status is earned beyond the 90-day Match Period, Delta updates the account within 15 business days of the requirements being completed [2].
No physical credentials are issued during the complimentary period or after it ends; the membership card is held in the Fly Delta app under My Wallet [2].
Exceptions and limits
- Diamond is out of reach. The match covers Platinum, Gold and Silver Medallion only, however senior the applicant's status is elsewhere [2].
- Borrowed status does not count. Promotional, temporary and complimentary elite status at another airline is ineligible, including status earned through any promotional or status match programme [2].
- Once every three years, with closed doors. An accepted applicant may enrol in the offer only once every three years, and the offer is not available to members previously enrolled at any time since 1 January 2023, or currently enrolled, in a Status Match Challenge, Reclaim My Status or a Corporate accelerated Medallion status offer [2].
- Partners sit outside the catch-all. The fallback for airlines missing from the comparison chart applies only to airlines that are not Delta airline partners [2].
- Delta keeps discretion. The offer is not transferable, valid documentation and proof of other-airline status are required, eligibility and qualification rest at Delta's sole discretion, and the offer is subject to change without notice [2].
Frequently asked questions
Can I match to Diamond Medallion?
No. The Medallion Status Match is offered only for the Platinum, Gold and Silver tiers, so holding the highest status at another airline still produces a match no higher than Platinum [2].
What happens if I miss the MQD target?
Matched status expires after 90 days unless that level or a higher one is awarded before then, and the member returns to their previous position in SkyMiles [2]. A member who misses their matched tier's target but clears a lower tier's MQD requirement can still take extended status at that lower tier [2].
How long does a status match request take to review?
Delta allows up to 15 business days for review, and the 90-day clock starts within 24 hours of the confirmation email, not on the date the request was submitted [2].
Do I have to fly Delta to keep matched status?
Yes. Alongside the MQD target, at least one Delta-marketed flight during the Match Period is required, and Delta Main Basic tickets do not satisfy it [2].
Can I apply if my elite status came from another status match?
No. The status must have been earned through the other airline's published requirements; complimentary status and status earned through a promotion do not qualify [2].
