How to request a Virgin Atlantic Flying Club status match
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club status match is a published offer that can give Flying Club Gold or Silver tier to members who already hold a top-tier or second-tier status in one of a fixed list of airline programmes and who have a confirmed future Virgin Atlantic flight booked on Virgin Atlantic or a codeshare partner with a VS flight number. [2] The matched tier is valid for 12 months from the date the account is upgraded, and retaining it takes 1,000 tier points for Gold or 400 tier points for Silver in that membership period. [2]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- The match is open to Flying Club members who hold top-tier or second-tier status in one of Virgin Atlantic's listed airline programmes and who have a confirmed future Virgin Atlantic flight, bought with money or redeemed using Flying Club miles. [2]
- For Gold, that booking must be in Premium or Upper Class; for Silver, Economy or higher. [2]
- At least one flight on the itinerary must carry a Virgin Atlantic (VS) flight number, and the other airline status must still be valid when you travel. [2]
- Matched status is valid for 12 months from the upgrade date; retaining it requires 1,000 tier points for Gold or 400 for Silver inside that membership period. [2]
Which airline programmes does Virgin Atlantic accept for a status match?
The offer is open to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members only, and the status you hold must appear on Virgin Atlantic's published list of qualifying airline programmes and tiers. [2] Virgin Atlantic sorts that list into a top tier, which supports a match to Flying Club Gold, and a second tier, which supports a match to Flying Club Silver. [2]
| Airline | Programme | Counted as top tier | Counted as second tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Airways | The British Airways Club | Gold | Silver |
| Air Canada | Aeroplan | 50K, 75K, Super Elite | 25K, 35K |
| Air India | Flying Returns | Gold or Platinum | Silver |
| American Airlines | AAdvantage | Executive Platinum or Concierge Key | Platinum Pro |
| Cathay Pacific | Marco Polo | Diamond | Gold |
| Emirates | Emirates Skywards | Platinum or Gold | Silver |
| Etihad | Etihad Guest | Gold, Platinum or Emerald | Silver |
| Iberia | Iberia Plus | Platino | Oro |
| Lufthansa | Miles & More | Hon Circle | Senator (Gold) |
| Qatar Airways | Privilege Club | Platinum, Gold | Silver |
| South African Airways | Voyager | Platinum, Gold | Silver |
| United Airlines | Mileage Plus | Premier 1K or Global Services | Premier Platinum |
The published terms add several eligibility limits. Members who received Flying Club Gold or Silver through a status match in the previous five years are not eligible, except where Virgin Atlantic expressly states otherwise. [2] Members who also hold any level of membership with a SkyTeam partner airline are not eligible for the offer. [2] Virgin Atlantic also retains the right to approve or decline Gold and Silver membership at its discretion. [2] For the general mechanics of these offers, see the status match and challenge overview.
Which flight do you need to book before applying?
For Gold, the terms require a confirmed Virgin Atlantic flight for future travel, bought with money or redeemed using Flying Club miles, booked on Virgin Atlantic or one of its codeshare partners in the Premium or Upper Class cabin. [2] Economy cabin bookings are expressly not eligible for Gold. [2] For Silver, the confirmed Virgin Atlantic revenue or redemption flight can be in Economy or any higher cabin. [2] In both cases at least one flight on the itinerary must carry a VS flight number. [2]
If you hold top-tier status with another airline but have booked a Virgin Atlantic Economy cabin, Virgin Atlantic awards Silver instead of Gold. [2] The airline adds that if you upgrade the booking to Premium or Upper Class before the match is applied, you should contact it, and it may at its discretion review the application and move you to Gold. [2]
Proof of the other airline's status means a photo or digital scan of your membership card showing your full name, your status level and the expiry date of that status, and the status being matched must still be valid when you travel. [2] Your Flying Club number must be on the booking when you apply and when you travel. [2]
How is the match applied to your booking?
The published route is to join Flying Club, book the qualifying flight and complete the status match form. [2] Virgin Atlantic reviews the application and confirms by email which status you are eligible for. [2] The upgrade is applied 72 hours before the qualifying flight, and once the account tier is updated it can take up to 48 hours for the new status to appear on the booking. [2]
Timing matters at the last minute: an application submitted within 48 hours of the qualifying flight may not be updated in time for departure, and the new status benefits cannot be used until the reservation reflects the new tier. [2]
What happens when the 12 months end?
Matched Gold or Silver membership is valid for 12 months from the date the account is upgraded, which the terms call the membership period. [2] To retain Gold, a member needs 1,000 tier points in that membership period; to retain Silver, 400 tier points. [2]
Flying Club's earning page lists a 30% Silver tier bonus and a 60% Gold tier bonus on Virgin Points. [5] Virgin Atlantic's status match page says Flying Club status travels across SkyTeam, including Air France and KLM in Europe. [2] The earning thresholds behind each tier are collected in elite qualification thresholds, and the tier levels themselves are set out in Virgin Atlantic Flying Club status.
Exceptions and limits
- Cancelled or changed bookings. If the qualifying booking is cancelled or changed without at least 72 hours' written notice to the status match team by email, the status match may be cancelled and the status may revert to Red, with future eligibility decided at Virgin Atlantic's discretion. [2] That penalty does not apply where the change or cancellation is due to circumstances beyond the member's control, including but not limited to airline-initiated changes, flight cancellations, government restrictions and medical emergencies. [2]
- No transfer or cash value. The offer is non-transferable, non-exchangeable and has no cash or monetary value. [2]
- The offer can change. Virgin Atlantic may amend, suspend or withdraw the status match offer at any time, subject to applicable law. [2]
- Governing law. The status match terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. [2]
- What this guide does not cover. It describes only Virgin Atlantic's public Flying Club status match; no other airline's match terms are described.
Frequently asked questions
Does Virgin Atlantic accept British Airways status for a match?
Yes. The British Airways Club Gold is on Virgin Atlantic's top-tier list and Silver is on the second-tier list, so a British Airways Gold member with a qualifying Premium or Upper Class booking can apply for Flying Club Gold, and a British Airways Silver member with a qualifying Economy or higher booking can apply for Silver. [2]
Can I get a Flying Club status match if I already hold SkyTeam status?
No. The offer is not available to members who also hold any level of membership with a SkyTeam partner airline. [2]
How long does a matched Flying Club status last?
Twelve months from the date the account is upgraded, and it is kept by earning 1,000 tier points for Gold or 400 tier points for Silver within that membership period. [2]
What proof of status do I need to send?
A photo or digital scan of your membership card that shows your full name, status level and the expiry date of the current status; the matched status must still be valid when you travel. [2]
Can I match again if I had a Flying Club status match before?
Not if you received Flying Club Gold or Silver through a status match within the previous five years, unless Virgin Atlantic expressly states otherwise. [2]
