GUIDE
Best Hotel Programs for Luxury Stays
Choosing a hotel programme for luxury stays turns less on the tier name than on what the rules actually deliver at the properties you book: whether breakfast is a stated entitlement or a brand-level maybe, how far an upgrade can go, and which hotels sit outside the programme altogether. Hilton writes the entitlement into its terms, while Marriott's rules are built around which brands and properties participate. [3] [2]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Hilton Honors sets out tier thresholds, a breakfast-or-credit choice and explicit upgrade ceilings, and Marriott Bonvoy sets out which brands and properties participate and where benefits can be withheld. [3] [2]
- Hilton caps upgrades by room type and by named property: Gold reaches "preferred rooms", Diamond reaches junior, standard or one-bedroom suites, and executive suites, villas and specialty floors are excluded at both levels. [3]
- At Marriott, brand participation is the deciding variable: Bulgari Hotels and Resorts and The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore do not participate at all, and at Atlantis, Paradise Island the breakfast option tied to the Elite Welcome Gift is not available. [2]
What these documents can settle
This page compares published rules only, and the documents differ in reach. Hilton's Program Terms and Conditions carry an effective date of 15 July 2026 and describe tier qualification, on-property benefits and upgrade limits in one text. [3] Marriott's Loyalty Program Terms & Conditions were updated in October 2026 and treat participation, supplemental terms and property-level exclusions at length. [2]
For ALL Accor and Shangri-La Circle, only the main brand sites were checked, and those pages describe programmes rather than rule them. [4] [5]
The portion of the Marriott terms checked covers program participation and property-level exceptions and does not reproduce the elite welcome-gift or upgrade provisions, so no Marriott breakfast or upgrade entitlement is described below. [2] Property-specific perks set by individual hotels are excluded throughout.
Hilton Honors: tiers, breakfast and upgrade ceilings
Hilton's terms set four elite tiers — Silver, Gold, Diamond and Diamond Reserve — and qualify them on stays, nights or eligible spend within a calendar year. [3] Gold requires 15 stays, 25 nights or US$6,000 of eligible spend; Diamond requires 25 stays, 50 nights or US$11,500; Diamond Reserve requires 40 stays and US$18,000, or 80 nights and US$18,000. [3] Base-point bonuses rise from 80% at Gold to 100% at Diamond and 120% at Diamond Reserve. [3] Full tier detail sits on the Hilton Honors programme page.
Breakfast is not stated as one flat entitlement. Hilton lists it among the MyWay on-property choices as a complimentary continental breakfast or a Daily Food & Beverage Credit, and says the choice varies by brand and region. [3] A member who receives complimentary Executive Lounge access that includes breakfast seven days a week is not also eligible for the daily credit. [3] Gold members get lounge access only when upgraded to the Executive Floor or to a room type that confers lounge access; Diamond members receive lounge access for themselves and one additional registered guest even without an upgrade. [3] The mechanics are unpacked on the breakfast benefit page.
Upgrades are space-available, decided at check-in and limited to one room per member per qualifying stay. [3] Gold upgrades go to "preferred rooms", which may include rooms off the Executive Floor that carry lounge access, but exclude executive suites, villas, specialty accommodations, floors or towers, and "Club" accommodation types. [3] Diamond upgrades reach junior, standard or one-bedroom suites, with the same exclusions for executive suites, villas and specialty categories. [3]
Some properties are carved out of the upgrade benefit entirely: Napua Tower at Grand Wailea, the Imperial Floor at Rome Cavalieri, Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa and certain Partner Accommodations. [3] The brands Hilton lists as offering no complimentary upgrades are mostly limited-service ones, including Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton, Tru, Spark, Homewood Suites and Motto. [3]
Two further rules matter on longer luxury stays. Late check-out must be requested and is subject to availability for every member except Diamond Reserve, which receives a guaranteed 4pm check-out at the brands Hilton lists, excluding certain Partner Accommodations. [3] The Silver, Gold and Diamond benefit lists each include a fifth-night-free benefit on all-Points Standard Room Reward Stays, restricted to five consecutive nights at the same property, up to 20 nights and no more than four free nights per stay. [3]
Marriott Bonvoy: participation is the variable
Marriott's rules put the emphasis on which brands and properties participate, and on what terms. [2] The Program Rules incorporate additional terms for properties that take part "in a limited or unique capacity", and warn that specific benefits, amenities, awards and services may not be available at those properties even where the property is not explicitly flagged as excluded. [2] The wider programme is set out on the Marriott Bonvoy page.
The participating brand list includes the group's luxury names — The Ritz-Carlton, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, St. Regis, JW Marriott, The Luxury Collection, W, EDITION, Autograph Collection and Design Hotels. [2] Two entries matter when planning a high-end stay: Bulgari Hotels and Resorts at all locations, and The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, are listed as not participating in the loyalty programme. [2] Branded Residences generally do not participate either; Marriott names three that do — Marriott Residences Salgados Resort in the Algarve, The Phoenician Residences in Scottsdale, and The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach. [2]
Some participating properties carry narrow carve-outs. At Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas, members may earn on room rate only and may redeem at three named towers, but the breakfast option associated with the Elite Welcome Gift is not available. [2] Design Hotels participation is limited and subject to brand-specific earning, redemption and benefit rules. [2] The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection takes part as an earning and redemption partner under its own terms. [2] These are the kind of property-level carve-outs covered by the brand exception entry.
ALL Accor and Shangri-La Circle
ALL's site separates "Benefits and status" from "Earn and redeem points" and sorts Accor's brands into Luxury, Lifestyle by Ennismore, Premium, Midscale and Economy. [4] It also advertises an ALL Accor+ subscription giving 15% off stays across more than 30 brands. [4]
Shangri-La's site presents Shangri-La Circle alongside four hotel brands — Shangri-La Hotels, Kerry Hotels, Traders Hotels and JEN — across more than 100 hotels and resorts in over 22 countries, regions and 76 destinations. [5] It lists "Children Eat Free" and "Earn Free Nights" among the reasons to join without stating conditions, and states that its best-rate guarantee applies only to bookings made on Shangri-La.com. [5] Neither page states which tiers exist, what breakfast a member receives, or whether upgrades are offered. [4] [5]
The comparison is incomplete for those two programmes, and the checklist below shows what to verify before relying on any of them.
Exceptions and limits
- Booking channel. Hilton withholds on-property benefits, including MyWay breakfast choices and upgrades, unless the reservation is made through an eligible Hilton website or app, the Hilton reservations line, the hotel directly, an IATA-accredited retail travel agent booking through a Hilton channel, or a designated GDS; third-party, opaque and package bookings do not qualify. [3]
- Property variation. Hilton says benefits and services offered by participating hotels may vary, and that not all amenities are provided by all participating hotels. [3]
- Who receives the benefit. Hilton requires the member to be the registered, paying and staying guest and makes member amenities non-transferable. [3] Marriott's rules state that points, awards, status and benefits belong to the individual member and may not be shared, sold or transferred except as the rules permit. [2]
- Upgrade scope. Hilton upgrades exclude group reservations and certain room rates as well as the room categories named above, and are granted for the whole stay as determined at check-in. [3]
- Programme exit. Marriott states that where a property leaves the programme, members stop earning there and awards are no longer valid after the exit date, even if the reservation was made before it. [2]
- Not covered here. Hotel-set perks, suite-upgrade policies applied at individual properties, and credit-card benefits are outside this page's scope. [3] [2]
