FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is codeshare lounge access?

Codeshare lounge access is the question of whether a traveller on a codeshare flight — one sold under one airline's flight number but operated by another airline — may use an airport lounge, and whose rules decide it. The answer follows the alliance and programme rules attached to the flight that is actually operated, so the marketing carrier's brand or cabin label does not by itself create an entitlement. Alliance policies describe the qualifying flight in their own terms: oneworld, for example, requires a traveller to be departing on a flight that is both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. Key takeaways

  • Lounge access on a codeshare is decided by the alliance and programme rules attached to the flight the operating carrier flies, not by the marketing carrier's brand alone. [1] [3]
  • oneworld requires the eligible flight to be both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. [1]
  • SkyTeam writes its premium-cabin and Elite Plus rules around same-day international flights operated by a SkyTeam member airline, including same-day transfers between two SkyTeam members. [3]
  • A business class ticket does not settle the question: oneworld excludes Qatar Airways "Business Lite" and Finnair "Business Light" fares from lounge access. [1]

How does a codeshare change lounge access?

A codeshare places two airlines on one journey: the marketing carrier sells the seat under its own flight number, and the operating carrier supplies the aircraft and crew. Both oneworld and SkyTeam write their lounge rules around the airline that operates the flight, which is why the marketing carrier's brand, cabin label or status tier does not by itself decide entry. [1] [3]

oneworld states the test directly: to be eligible, a traveller must be departing on a flight that is both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. [1] Where a lounge is run by a third party, eligible customers may use it only when it is contracted by the airline they are travelling on, and arrivals lounges, spa and pre-flight dining facilities are excluded. [1]

SkyTeam's published policy is written around the operated flight. First and Business Class customers have access when travelling on a same-day international flight operated by a SkyTeam member airline, or on same-day transfers between flights operated by two SkyTeam members. [3] Elite Plus members have access regardless of the class they fly, on the same basis. [3] For connections, both the domestic and the international flight must be operated by a SkyTeam member airline, and every segment must be booked in First or Business Class. [3]

Star Alliance sells paid lounge entry as a product separate from status. Its terms for that product require the traveller to be flying on a Star Alliance member carrier flight, cover only the lounge reserved, and ask for the reservation plus a valid boarding pass for the same day of travel at the door. [2] No frequent flyer status or cabin of travel is needed for that purchase. [2] SkyTeam, by contrast, states that it is not currently possible to purchase lounge access via skyteam.com. [3]

Which flights count for lounge access at each alliance?

The three alliances describe the qualifying flight and the qualifying traveller differently.

Alliance lounge tests applied to a codeshare journey
AllianceFlight that countsTravellers who qualify
oneworldMarketed and operated by a oneworld member airline [1]Emerald and Sapphire members departing on such a flight, regardless of cabin; First or Business Class customers, who receive the equivalent class of lounge regardless of status [1]
SkyTeamSame-day international flight operated by a SkyTeam member airline, or same-day transfers between two SkyTeam members [3]Elite Plus members regardless of travel class; First and Business Class customers [3]
Star Alliance (paid entry)A Star Alliance member carrier flight [2]Anyone holding a reservation for that specific lounge [2]

Tier levels sit inside those tests. oneworld Emerald members can use First Class, Business Class or frequent flyer lounges, while Sapphire members are welcomed in Business Class or frequent flyer lounges, a list that excludes Qantas Domestic Business Lounges. [1]

When does the operating carrier's fare rule override status?

A premium cabin does not settle the question on its own. oneworld lists two business class fares that carry no lounge access: Qatar Airways "Business Lite" fares and Finnair "Business Light" fares are not eligible for lounge access. [1]

The operating carrier's own club rules can also depart from the alliance baseline, which is where a marketing carrier's status can stop delivering what the tier label suggests. SkyTeam's house rules say complimentary access at Delta Sky Clubs is no longer extended to Delta SkyMiles members with Elite Plus equivalent status — Diamond, Platinum and Gold Medallion — when flying in Main Cabin or Delta Comfort+ internationally, and that from 1 January 2024 Delta SkyMiles members travelling in Basic Economy or equivalent partner cabins do not have access to Delta Sky Clubs. [3] SkyTeam Elite Plus members of other SkyTeam member frequent flyer programmes are not affected, and Delta Elite Plus members flying on Delta or another SkyTeam-operated flight can still use other SkyTeam member airline lounges and SkyTeam branded lounges, though third-party lounges are excluded. [3]

Paid lounge programmes sold by individual airlines sit outside the oneworld agreement: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines and Qantas offer programmes that let customers pay for lounge access, and those programmes are not part of the oneworld agreement, so members are not entitled to access under it. [1]

Exceptions and limits

  • Regional carve-outs in oneworld. Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines Atmos Rewards members, whatever their tier or cabin, are not eligible for oneworld member airline lounges when travelling solely within and between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. [1] American Airlines AAdvantage members are not eligible on flights solely between the U.S., Canada, Mexico (except Mexico City), the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean, nor on U.S. domestic flights, subject to some exceptions. [1]
  • Lounges outside the policy. oneworld excludes arrivals lounges, spa and pre-flight dining facilities, British Airways Concorde lounges, the American Airlines and British Airways Chelsea lounge at JFK Terminal 8, and Hawaiian Airlines Premier Clubs. [1]
  • Timing and region in SkyTeam. Access is given at departure and transfer airports, not on arrival, and international travel excludes journeys between the U.S. and the Caribbean. [3] Domestic lounge access for Elite Plus members has applied since 1 April 2025 at selected member airline lounges, and separate domestic lounge access policies may apply to Aerolineas Argentinas Aerolineas Plus and Delta Air Lines SkyMiles members. [3]
  • Guests. A oneworld Emerald or Sapphire member's guest must also be travelling on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld carrier [1]; a SkyTeam Elite Plus member's guest must be on the same SkyTeam member-operated flight [3].
  • Scope. This page covers the alliance-level lounge policies published by oneworld, SkyTeam and Star Alliance. A programme's own club rules can be narrower than the alliance baseline, as SkyTeam's Delta Sky Clubs rule shows [3]. Status held in another alliance member programme can still qualify where the alliance test is met: oneworld admits members of oneworld airline frequent flyer programmes with the equivalent of Emerald or Sapphire tier status [1], and SkyTeam states that Elite Plus members of other SkyTeam member frequent flyer programmes are not impacted by the Delta Sky Clubs restriction [3].

Frequently asked questions

Does a codeshare flight get lounge access?

Only where the operating carrier's alliance policy recognises the flight. oneworld requires a flight both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline [1], while SkyTeam grants access on same-day international flights operated by a SkyTeam member airline [3].

Can I use oneworld Emerald status on a flight sold by a non-oneworld airline?

oneworld ties eligibility to a flight that is both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline, so a flight marketed by a carrier outside oneworld does not meet that test. [1]

Does my status work at the operating carrier's own club?

Not always. SkyTeam's house rules stop complimentary Delta Sky Clubs access for Delta SkyMiles Diamond, Platinum and Gold Medallion members flying Main Cabin or Delta Comfort+ internationally, and from 1 January 2024 in Basic Economy or equivalent partner cabins, while other programmes' Elite Plus members are unaffected. [3]

Does a business class codeshare fare guarantee lounge access?

No. Qatar Airways "Business Lite" and Finnair "Business Light" fares are not eligible for lounge access under oneworld rules. [1]

Can I use a lounge on arrival?

SkyTeam provides access at departure and transfer airports only, not on arrival [3], and oneworld excludes arrivals lounges from its policy [1].
