Hilton Honors vs Marriott Bonvoy: Published Benefits Compared

Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy are the loyalty programmes of Hilton and Marriott International, and each publishes its elite tiers, earning rules and redemption conditions in programme terms that a member accepts by taking part. [5] [3] This comparison sets out only what those published terms state, side by side, and marks where a benefit depends on brand, region, property or booking channel. [5] [3]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • Hilton Honors publishes four elite tiers with thresholds based on stays, nights or eligible spend in a calendar year; Diamond Reserve is the only one of them that the terms require a member to reach with spend and stays or nights. [5]
  • Marriott Bonvoy's rules say elite bonus points depend on the member's achieved status. [3]
  • Both programmes forfeit points when an account goes twenty-four consecutive months without qualifying activity, and both keep an award already redeemed before forfeiture valid. [5] [3]
  • Hilton's fifth-night-free rule applies only to all-points Standard Room Reward Stays, and no more than four free nights are given per stay. [5]

Elite tiers and qualification

Hilton Honors names four elite tiers — Silver, Gold, Diamond and Diamond Reserve — and qualifies members on stays, nights or eligible spend within any calendar year. [5] Silver is awarded at 4 stays, 10 nights or US$2,500 of eligible spend; Gold at 15 stays, 25 nights or US$6,000; Diamond at 25 stays, 50 nights or US$11,500. [5] Diamond Reserve is awarded at 40 stays and US$18,000 of eligible spend, or 80 nights and US$18,000. [5] Members must requalify each calendar year and keep a tier for the rest of the year in which it was earned plus the following calendar year. [5] Hilton also states that points earned do not count toward elite qualification. [5]

On the Marriott side, the member-benefits menu lists five levels: Silver Elite, Gold Elite, Platinum Elite, Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite. [4] Elite members receive bonus points, and the amount depends on the status achieved. [3] Marriott promotes Lifetime Elite status in Silver, Gold and Platinum "that never expires". [2] Hilton's Lifetime Diamond status instead requires at least ten years at Diamond, non-consecutive, plus 1,000 paid or Reward nights or US$200,000 of lifetime eligible spend. [5]

Earning on paid stays

Hilton defines Eligible Spend as room rate, eligible food and beverage, telephone, laundry, pay-per-view movies, entertainment and recreational facilities, and other incidental charges billed to the member's room during a qualifying stay; taxes are excluded. [5] Members earn 10 base points per US dollar at most brands, and 5 at Homewood Suites, Home2 Suites (though Home2 Suites hotels in China earn 10), Spark by Hilton, Tru by Hilton, Apartment Collection and YOTEL, and 3 plus 3,000 bonus points for every ten nights at LivSmart Studios. [5] At YOTEL, base points are earned on room rate only. [5] Base points can be earned for up to four rooms in a stay if all eligible spend is paid on one folio, but stay and night credit count for one room only. [5] Elite bonuses are stated as 20% for Silver, 80% for Gold, 100% for Diamond and 120% for Diamond Reserve, applied to the total base point credit from earning rooms. [5]

Marriott awards 10 base points per US dollar on qualifying charges at most brands, 5 at Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, City Express, Element, Four Points Flex, Homes & Villas, Marriott Executive Apartments, Protea, Residence Inn and TownePlace Suites, and 4 at StudioRes. [3] Series by Marriott pays 10 in the United States, Canada and Greater China and 5 elsewhere, and at Marriott Executive Apartments members earn points only on qualifying rates. [3] Qualifying charges cover the member's room and up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates, food and beverage excluding alcohol and tobacco where prohibited by law, in-room direct-dial telephone and fax, and in-room movies and video games. [3]

Free nights, expiry and moving points

Hilton's fifth-night-free benefit is listed among the Silver, Gold and Diamond Elite benefits: on an all-points Standard Room Reward Stay of five nights or more, every fifth night is free, with no more than four free nights per stay, over stays of up to 20 nights, confirmed at booking. [5] It does not apply to paid stays or Points & Money Rewards, or where the stay is booked as part of a Reward Stay offer, package or promotion. [5] Marriott's comparison page checked sets out airline transfers instead: most of 38 airline partners receive points at 3:1, with 5,000 bonus miles per 60,000 points transferred and a higher 10,000-mile bonus for United MileagePlus; the bonus does not apply to American Airlines AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles or Delta SkyMiles. [4] Transfers run from 3,000 to 240,000 points a day, and Marriott members may buy up to 100,000 points per calendar year. [4]

On retention, Hilton forfeits all accumulated points after twenty-four consecutive months without a qualifying stay, point-earning activity, a points purchase or a points donation, and may remove the member from the programme. [5] Marriott requires qualifying activity at least once every twenty-four months, counting earning or redeeming points or miles, buying points, completing a qualifying stay, or converting points with designated partners. [3] Gifting, transferring or receiving points does not count for Marriott, and points forfeited after that period cannot be reinstated. [3]

Breakfast, lounges and late check-out

Hilton delivers breakfast through MyWay on-property benefits, which the terms describe as including a complimentary continental breakfast or a daily food and beverage credit that varies by brand and region. [5] Those benefits, along with standard WiFi and space-available upgrades, require a reservation made through Hilton's own channels, reservations and care lines, the app, the hotel directly, or an IATA-accredited retail agent booking through a Hilton channel or a listed GDS, and are not awarded on third-party website, opaque or non-designated channel bookings. [5] Gold members reach an Executive Lounge only when upgraded to the Executive Floor or to a room type that confers lounge access, for the member and one guest. [5] Diamond members receive lounge access for the member and up to one registered guest even without an upgrade, excluding executive suites, villas and specialty or Club accommodation types. [5] A member whose lounge access includes breakfast seven days a week is not eligible for the daily food and beverage credit. [5] Late check-out must be requested and is subject to availability for every tier except Diamond Reserve, which is guaranteed 4pm late check-out for one room at the listed brands. [5]

Marriott's terms refer to a breakfast option attached to the Elite Welcome Gift benefit and state that this option is not available at Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Neither programme promises a benefit at every property. Hilton says not all amenities are provided by all participating hotels and that on-property benefits vary. [5] Marriott says specific benefits may not be available at properties that participate in a limited or unique capacity, and points members to separate supplemental terms. [3]
  • Hilton lists ineligible stays that earn nothing, including wholesale and tour operator packages, contracted crew rates, travel agency discount rates, casino player card packages, timeshare stays, complimentary or barter rooms and third-party website bookings. [5] Marriott excludes Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore, all Bulgari locations and several named properties, and says branded residences generally do not participate. [3]
  • Both programmes reserve the right to change rules with or without notice, including changes that affect the value of points. [5] [3]
  • Missing-credit windows differ: Hilton asks for requests within six months of the activity, and accepts stays up to 30 days before enrolment for new members. [5] Marriott asks for requests within one year, with the same 30-day pre-enrolment allowance. [3]
  • Marriott's Lifetime Elite accounts are not currently subject to points expiration, though the programme may apply an expiration policy to them in future. [3] Hilton's Diamond extension is a one-time opportunity with different criteria for 2026 and for 2027 onward. [5]
  • Marriott's terms carry a separate section for members with Chinese citizenship residing in Chinese mainland, which prevails where it conflicts with the rest of the Program Rules [3]. Hilton's terms direct members who regularly reside in Chinese mainland with PRC citizenship to a separate PRC-specific section for terms specific to their membership, without stating in the text checked that it prevails [5].
